I think a second Brisbane team will only thrive if they have a number of Qld players in the side. I’m not saying they need to be playing Origin, but they need to be Queesnlanders. The Broncos and Cowboys are very strongly supported by many due to the fact that they are stacked with Qld talent. The Titans are easily the least supported and have the least success on and off the field. They also have a squad made up of at least half NSW players. Their players are bad, they just don’t have the same appeal to Queenslanders that the Broncos and Cowboys do.

Are the Broncos losing their lustre?

So are you trying to argue that 15% of conventional tackles involve swinging arms? Of course a player is more likely to cop a regulation high shot than a shoulder charge to the head, as most tackles in a game are conventional. Basic probability tells you that. However, it’s all about the potential that it has to cause damage. A shoulder to the head contains a lot more force than a swinging arm to the head. Just beause it’s a contact sport doesn’t mean players should expect to get hit in the head every so often. There’s nothing tough about taking a shot to the head.

Time for the judiciary to take charge

You are correct in saying they had a chance with Slater, however, it was always going to be a tough one to rule on. Winterstein was falling and Slater’s contact was more with his hip than his shoulder.
I am aware of why Thaiday spent time on the sideline and his loading. The grab is still what pushed him over the line to get the one week.

Good article. I just wonder if Pearce is the one that should they have stuck with. I think the Blues selectors and fans would have been best served getting behind Mullen when he was there. But, it’s too late now. I agree that they need to find a half and stick with him. Sure give Pearce a couple more years. Queensland still look the goods for that long anyway. He doesn’t have the talent of Adam Reynolds, so I think NSW are best served putting Reynolds in as a long term option in a couple of seasons when he is mentally better equipped for the job.

Blues fans must get behind Pearce

You have made a number of statements irrelevant to both the article and the comments, which I’m not going to get into. I’m interested as to what you disagree about with the article. The article in no way suggests the Broncos are being held to ransom by players. It, in fact, suggests that they should give a player they developed (Ben Hunt) a run before he is lured away by the almighty dollar or a greater opportunity. I think you need to see the sporting world for the way it is today. We aren’t in the good old days where loyalty rules any longer. The reality is that players will be lured away unless they are offered an incentive to stay, be that financial, or a better playing opportunity. The incentive for Hunt, as mentioned in the article, is to give him a run at half back, not a pay rise.

Desperate times at the once-mighty Brisbane Broncos

Unfortunately, I have the same fear.

I absolutely agree that they need to spend some money and look outside of their own development. I was extremely disappointed they didn’t make a genuine play for one of the top three Qld halves who were to be off contract at some point over the next two years. All have now renewed their contract.

It may be a bit of a head in the sand approach, but I am big on the Broncos having good Qld players at the club. That is not to say having some of the English players you have mentioned wouldnt have its reward.

At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be too many options for them. They really missed the boat for a big signing for the start of the season and need to work with what they’ve got. With that said, if the opportunity to sign a gun playmaker presents itself, they would be silly not to consider it. They do, however, need a playmaker. They already have a game breaker in Hodges, so I was relieved when the Dugan deal fell through.

Perhaps there is a Qld gun half out there who has gone unnoticed???

I don’t have a problem with Thaiday getting a week, I have a problem with the inconsistencies already demonstrated by the judiciary this year. If Thaiday gets a week, Bailey should have gotten a week. The whole carry over points just make the whole system a debacle. There has to be a way to have a certain suspension for a certain charge. Forget the early guilty plea. You do the crime, you do the time. If a player is found not guilty, they get let off. I’m not saying a charge can’t be downgraded to a lesser consequence, but the carry over points are just a mess. As for one week charges like this, well maybe a fine could be put in place and an official warning. If you get a second written warning, you get your week suspension then. Forgive me from straying to another topic, but a one week ban for touching a referee without any ill intent and a one week ban for a player blindsiding another player with a shoulder charge resulting in a concussion…that just doesn’t seem to add up. The NRL judiciary is a joke.

NRL must come down hard on contact with referees
