Very interesting article. I don’t see how you expect to generate clicks/sell ads with such a well reasoned and thoughtful piece but to each his own. 😛

A measured discussion about an important issue in NRL? Ha! Let's just scream about concussion!

I would have thought deliberately conceding a penalty to stop the game is a professional foul irrespective of the outcome of the challenge.

Experts Roar: Should the NRL keep, increase or eliminate captain’s challenge rule?

Eligibility doesn’t have to go both ways. Aus can agree that they’ll pick players from an NZ SR side without NZ doing the same.

If some Australian youngster gets the chance to play with the Crusaders for a couple of years without it affecting his eligibility, he’d be stupid not to take the opportunity to improve his game.

NZ may not derive the same benefit as Aus but selectors have made mistakes before. Who’s to say there isn’t a 10 sitting low down the pecking order in NZ that just needs the right environment to become test caliber? Maybe the right environment for that player is in Australia.

Dave Rennie lays it all out ahead of Wallabies start date

I don’t know. Hopefully the touch judge isn’t copping too badly given how close a call it was and the fact that it’s a only a game.

NRL admits Manly were dudded by wrong call

Oh yeah it was a really tough call for the official to make; a legit 50/50 to the naked eye and at pace.

At the end of the day, the Sea Eagles were out played for 60 odd minutes and probably didn’t really deserve to be so close.

It’s a shame that the focus is on that 2 secs of play instead of the other 79:58 that represented a hell of a contest.

It’s nice that you don’t prescribed to the “float physics speeding train theories” but it’s Newton’s first law of motion and there isn’t much debate in the scientific community.
By the same logic you may as well argue against a knock on call on the basis that you don’t believe in gravity.

NRL admits Manly were dudded by wrong call

Fair enough. Guess I blew it up a little further in my mind.

Either way, saying that Slipper was fired “on the coaches whim” doesn’t seem accurate; the failed drug tests might have had something to do with it.

For the record (and from the outside) that one looked like a mistake to me.

Also, are selection decisions about other players from 3 years ago sufficient justification for these guys to remove themselves from the collective bargaining agreement? If lack of loyalty from QRU was a problem, why did they start the season at all or walk out last year?

Wasn’t slipper arrested for possession?

Reds trio refuse to take pay cut, stood down by QRU

Ahh right. That makes sense; although it doesn’t seem to be most ethical way to go about it.

Reds trio refuse to take pay cut, stood down by QRU

I don’t get it.
Presumably the pay cut was negotiated between RA and RUPA.
What’s the point of having RUPA represent and negotiate on behalf of the players if players are free to ignore the collective bargaining outcome and try to get their own deal?

Thanks for the clarification. I’m still not sure it applies to this situation, regardless.

The organisation of the T20 Women's World Cup is straight out of the 1950s

I thought the term “mansplaining” is rooted in a man explaining something he has little knowledge of in a confident manner.

Given Nasser Hussein’s experience and achievements it can be reasonably assumed that he has an in-depth knowledge of the game and thus wouldn’t be mansplaining.

I think he might have been commentating.

I wonder if Sam Cane being moved to 8 was requested from a higher level. There isn’t an obvious candidate to replace Kieran Read in the All Blacks but they’ve got two very good number 7s they’ve been trying to decide between for the past couple of years.

Six talking points from Round 1 Super Rugby

On the “ones to watch” front – they’re be some pressure on Scott Barrett this season too. They’ve lost somewhere around 400 tests + super rugby games off forward IP during the off season.

I think it’ll be really interesting to see how they’ll deal with it.

I’m starting to think Israel Folau may be like Lennie from Of Mice and Men and trashing him isn’t entirely appropriate.

If it were up to the broadcasters we’d already be at limited overs T-Ball and they could play it in a 5 min break between MAFS and MKR.

Does anyone really care about The Hundred?

The referees are likely rugby fans and as fans I’m sure they have an expectation around the results of games.

I think that this expectation subconsciously affects their decisions in that maybe you’d expect a weaker team to try some “alternative” measures to cause an upset. This may cause the refs to look at one team a little more closely.

I don’t think there is a conspiracy or corruption against the minnows but I think they are dealt with more harshly but it may not be intentional.

Unfortunately, I can’t see how’d you’d remove internal bias from the referee’s as long as they are fans but I don’t think non-fans are likely to go into refereeing.

Is there a conspiracy against the minnows at the RWC?

I’m not sure their scrum and lineout would be up to the task.

The Wallabies are starting to feel like that cliche about the French side; you’re not sure which side will turn up on the day or even in which half.

If the right team shows up for close to 80 mins they might be the best team in the world; if not they could be the worst.

Wallabies down but not out after Wales loss

Thanks for the compliment. The avatar is from my favourite Super Rugby moment 😂

Yeah!!! Good call. Scrum speed in the early cups was something to behold as well

Great idea. Hopefully people much more intelligent than me can find a way to implement it.

It’s my understanding that GPS technology is accurate to around 1 metre which is good from space but is an issue when your talking millimeters between being on or offside.

The other issue is that the offside line at a ruck (behind the last feet) effectively changes each time a new player enters the ruck. If a player loses their feet they are no longer part of the ruck and the line changes again.
(Correct me if I’m wrong, referees)

I’d love to see it happen though, or even have the touch judges responsible for it in all facets.

Why doesn't World Rugby use GPS tracking to monitor offside?

Even if you do take the view that it’s about marketing, isn’t Rugby a professional sport?

Marketing is a part of doing business and trying to grow the game and attract sponsors, broadcasters and advertisers.

Hands off our haka

I was always taught “the ref is always right” as a central tenant of the game but Cheika has typically ignored this in the past.

I haven’t seen that but it sounds like it’s worth a watch for comedy’s sake.
