It’s great to see Baynes back and smiling. Didn’t expect him to put as much muscle mass back on after his rehab. Brisbane are going to get spanked though. Defensively they are still trying to gel.

NBL Round 2 Talking Points: Kings still rule court, Cats go wild, Bullets falling well short of expectations

I drew that line after the Tigers game lol. Walters defensive structure sucks and they have reverted to 2021. Carrigan directs and solidifies the middle without him Walters has no clue how to stem the middle.

Reynolds says Broncos have to use 'sh--ty feeling' as motivation as Melbourne run up 60 to derail finals hopes

Exchanging texts with my father in law on this exact point. He’s not been their best forward and mind was obviously elsewhere. Uncle Nick gets what he wants from V’landys.

'Pony up': Broncos must do whatever it takes to keep Haas as Origin star requests immediate release

Brisbane have made some stupid decisions not allowing younger talent a chance earlier than planned and their approach to Walker was awful. But when they put their best offer forward and get this nonsense, I can’t see why other teams love this. But then again, everyone hates Brisbane, seem to be a good feeder club for the NRL lol.

Sees new manager. Checks said managers history. Sees Nick Politis wants Haas. Ah yes, of course.

'Pony up': Broncos must do whatever it takes to keep Haas as Origin star requests immediate release

The entire saga sucks. The NRL contract circus continues through these outrageous de-registered agent morons. Orr is right to sue Haas.

'Pony up': Broncos must do whatever it takes to keep Haas as Origin star requests immediate release

Ponga at the back and Brimson off the bench. Can’t really combat those centres on every set, Qld will have to dominate possession and field position off the forwards and a more astute kicking game between DCE and Munster. NSW without it’s Kangaroos halves will still win.

It’s time for Queensland to go all-in for Origin 3

Agree. Not really worth watching a contest that NZ dominates and no one else really cares for. If England win the Euro and put a good side up for the world cup under Harry Kane, you will see even less interest in English Rugby.

Rugby League: Not sick - but not well

I can see why the NRL did it. They wanted to stop the ARU registering him. I just don’t buy them the rules shut up arguments. Rules change and they grant exceptions. Ronnie stuffed up paperwork as a kid. It’s a bit harsh to call him a liar when he was 10 months off eligibility. He will be a great player for Samoa or NZ.

Mulitalo's Origin dream over as NRL makes final decision

So on that Sualli shouldn’t be in the NRL for the Roosters at all. Full stop. I think Ronnie being a year off eligibility compared to the NRL granting exceptions regularly is a bit unfair. They purposefully don’t follow the black and white of their own rules all the time and use discretion.

Mulitalo's Origin dream over as NRL makes final decision

AFL aficionado’s also claim the sport developed from an influence by Marngrook and thus Australia’s only true sport. But this is completely unfounded.

Rugby League: Not sick - but not well

They wanted a sport so frenetic off the ball that they could say how smart it was so Victorians and South Australians could say how goddamn intelligent they are over those brutes. Add to the fact that they decided to make the umpires perform an interpretive dance at every stage of the game just so we could be entertained by the synchronised umping they perform.

Rugby League: Not sick - but not well

I’m a Broncos fan and even when they were still moderately successful I’ve found myself watching less League, less Union, but watching a lot more NHL, NBA and European Football comps. All those leagues have bad officiating, they just have so much of a larger player market. Since US top tier sports such as Basketball put their NBA players in the Olympics (and same with NHL players getting allowed to rep at the winter olympics) they have just gotten more interest and eyeballs on their sports, along with good national representation. I know the NBL has had it’s issues, but if you went into any League heartland now you can guarantee kids will have a favourite NBA side and might likely play basketball over league or soccer, etc. I don’t think league is existentially in trouble, but the focus on AFL carving up the future growth markets sort of discounts the countless other sports that have exposure due to just being popular and accessible online and on television. I don’t know if the lopsided table will cause too much harm, but it won’t help what the free market of sport has already done. Would be such an interesting long-term study.

Rugby League: Not sick - but not well

Maybe it’s time to bring back the draft and before all of you throw stones at me about ‘been there done that’. The AFL, with its vastly superior legal teams (e.g. negotiated stadium rights with State Governments…) have managed to have a draft. There are ways of doing it to avoid restraint of trade issues.

*Whispers* Throw out Green with the game plan.

State of Origin 2 player ratings: Queensland Maroons

I went to the third game in Brisbane in 2005 when the Blues absolutely killed the Maroons and you thought it was the continuation of a dynasty and they should have won win more than 3 series. That QLD team was old and a really odd mix of selections (not enough formidable emerging talents in that team). Meninga really cast an eye to the future and that future was really helped by Cameron Smith. Wouldn’t surprise me that this Maroons team loses the next 2 or 3 series until the likes of Walker, Walsh and Grant truly start to shine. This Blues team do look like what Meninga had to work with when JT, Cam and Slater were at their height and the scary thing is that Cleary is only getting better!

The Maroons are awful and the Blues are going to take the series 3-0

I’ve noticed I should have said “write” instead of right lol. I liked what AJ wrote on this. I agree with a lot of the commentary that it was seasons too late and poorly implemented, I prefer the pre-season trialling of it and making sure the ref boss can actually direct the conversation (supported by the NRL leadership) back through the clubs and get that support. I still believe Johnathan Thurston could have played 2-3 more seasons if he wasn’t targeted post kicking as much as he was until it was penalised / scrutinised. It has taken probably ended more guys careers prematurely.

Wanna stay on the field? Don’t hit a player in the head

You can’t right off every criticism of this as dinosaurs. Those send-offs absolutely should have been send offs every day of the week. Many pointed out that the 2020 rule changes had a negative effect of tiring the players and forcing the lazy grabs that have been connecting around the head. The Oz-Tag comments were less about contact and more about the type of players who were more about speed (this is what Ricky’s concerns were about). V’landys throwing the refs under the bus was unconscionable after his proclaiming of not doing this the previous year and telling the commentariat to pull their heads in. I just don’t know why the commission can’t review and implement these rules in the off-season, present it to the clubs, ensure the clubs are training appropriately for the rules and also getting a good indication from the clubs how they have adjusted. Other codes do this, I don’t know why the NRL believes it has to be so reactive mid-season when it should be absolutely about being pro-active in the offseason.

Wanna stay on the field? Don’t hit a player in the head

Just do what fast leagues overseas do, have TV timeouts at particular times without a stoppage or mandate a stoppage by allowing a team to take one timeout per half. Also have a concussion sub with strict conditions. NRL Physio is a big advocate of this, many fans think it would be exploited (of course clubs will try), but if you have your best 13 on the park, surely the concussion sub won’t give you much of an advantage if you are cheating it.

Have the NRL’s new rules created injury havoc?

None of this is helpful and you tend to just niggle at guys on here anyway with a condescending tone. So be constructive and objective instead of attacking the observer. No one here should excuse what Jai did. He was fined and the game will likely have to stamp out the rag dolling to protect the player. NSW immediately went to false equivalence by complaining about Friend clearing a HIA when Cordner was but was ruled out. Bottom line is, the HIA system will be modified to account for micro-concussions and health assessments between games.

Six talking points from State of Origin Game 3

It’s a separate entity with an aim of supporting the aims and objectives of the Ltd club. The seperate entity funds the community outreach and the old boys.

Awakening the sleeping giant: Why the Broncos coming last is bad news for every other NRL team

Excellent article Tim. I’ve been having this conversation with my father in law for years. Broncos management really has made some poor recruiting and development decisions and needs a change of structure in football operations that puts more time and effort back into scouting and growth in SEQLD. One of the management issues that really showed how some of the poor culture got into the front office was the wealthy club asking for donations from fans and members for its high performance facility.
This club makes a shedload from its gaming facilities and sponsorships through sports betting. The nerve of grifting from many members who are sick of the pervasive influence of gambling (hello late night pokies last year) is something that is not looked at closely. I wish the wealthier NRL clubs would look at what Collingwood has done and start thinking more about corporate social responsibility before they make an example of players like TVP about morals and ethics.

The only persons in the Storm who knows the abyss were their accountants.

Smith feels for battling Broncos

I agree with Ben and have been saying this for years. He does not get seriously taken on this because of his personal links with Wayne Bennett. Honestly, yes that’s a factor, but Ikin’s criticism is shared by a lot of Broncos fans. This team since 2015 thought they could build off that side at it’s peak and in signing some deals let some quality players go. They took a risk on past performance equating future success.

Ben Ikin savages the Broncos list management

Yes that was my thoughts. Not really good enough from The Roar. Really a click-bait headline. If I want all blustering headlines, I’d go waste my time on a rival not-to-be-named pay TV website.

I am disgusted and ashamed to be a Broncos fan
