The AFL is on 7mate in Sydney. That channel rates 4.7%..

Hardly a big code in Northern States.

Expansion: The dirty word in rugby league

AFL is hardly going gangbusters in NSW at the moment. One reason nearly all AFL games are being shown on 7mate instead on Ch7 in Sydney. The AFL footly show was shown at 1am here lol..
The sport can’t even grow out of Australia. One thing Rugby League is having way more success at.
Things aren’t all as rosey in AFL as you think.

Expansion: The dirty word in rugby league

Cutting two teams is just a massive step backwards and removing supporters. The sport needs to grow by adding teams in new locations.

Expansion: The dirty word in rugby league

I don’t think you have any idea how popular the Sharks are in the Shire. Was like NYE there for days when they won the premiership in 2016.
You will kill off support for Rugby League in a huge part of Sydney. Sorry but very badly researched idea.
As for the Roosters, what your going to move the most successful club in Sydney in recent years to the other side of the country??
All your doing by moving Roosters and Sharks is killing off a fan base. Does nothing good for the game. Other codes will just move in where these teams were take the supporters to their sport and the fanbase is lost forever.
Perth needs a new team from scratch and so does Brisbane and possibly New Zealand one day.
New teams is really the only way unless Wests is moved to Perth but still playing occasional home games in Sydney. Would never work with any other Sydney club.

Expansion: The dirty word in rugby league

Can’t say I agree with any of this. Moving teams like Cronulla and Manly, are you serious?? These are clubs with generational support and a lot of tradition. Move them out of Sydney you pretty much throw away tens of thousands of supporters. The Sharks have a huge following in the Shire and getting rid of Sydneys only Northern Rugby League team is just as stupid. People are still reeling about the Bears 20 years later. Supporters lost forever.
There is only one Sydney team where a relocation could possibly work. Moving Wests Tigers to Perth while still playing the occasional game at Leichardt and Western Sydney. So then you don’t completely alienate team supporters.
As for not enough players, I think there is easily enough players to add one or two more teams. Plenty of good players in the UK and there are reserve grade teams here that would give some NRL teams a run for their money.
Is funny how people are so against expansion, yet a lot of the most recent expansions have been the most successful. Look at Melbourne Storm. They are in AFL heartland and the best Rugby League team on the planet. Now can anyone imagine the NRL without Melbourne these days. Cowboys & Broncos have one of the biggest rivalry crowds in the NRL and both expansion clubs. (NOT RELOCATION). The merger clubs seem to be doing the worst these days so we know that doesn’t work.
Expansion of NEW TEAMS can be done, was done before and can be done again. Heck they started the Toronto Wolfpack in a non Rugby League nation and they are averaging 7,000 a game already.
If it can be done in successfully in Canada, surely it can be done in Perth and Queensland.

Expansion: The dirty word in rugby league

Are some tough athletes in Russia. The nation would be a force if if the sport ever went professional there.

NRL still likely to chase US game in 2020

Cronulla working class lol.. Are you serious Aligee?. The average house price there is over 2 million bucks. Is the most expensive district in the Southern half of Sydney.

I guarantee if Manly were near the top of the table all the time like Cronulla. The support would come back.

You might like watching Manly suffer, but we need them

Hey has a point. GWS has had audiences of only 17,000 on 7mate in Sydney.
Channel 7 rarely show AFL on it’s main channel.

A Giant fail: GWS are turning wine into water

Spudd should be mad director of Manly too. He makes a lot of sense.

'Spud' Carroll's ultimate bucket list for Manly

Every time a club has a bad period people say they should move to Perth. The same thing was said about Cronulla before they won the comp in 2016.

If Manly were top of the league, would we even be having this conversation?

You might like watching Manly suffer, but we need them

You can see it upsets cliper that Rugby League is so much more successful than AFL in NZ and around the world. Head in the sand as usual living in the all code city of Melbourne.

Kiwis pip Kangaroos 26-24 in Test thriller

AFL has no hope in New Zealand clipper. Are you delusional? AFL cancelled exhibition matches early in NZ due to such poor support. AFL will only ever be liked in Australia and nowhere else.

Rugby League does have a decent following in New Zealand. They have been the number one Rugby League team in the world with their own NRL team too.
Where do you think all these Islanders in the NRL are from?

By the way Australia vs Tonga is a sellout in NZ. Boom.

Kiwis pip Kangaroos 26-24 in Test thriller

Why do you keep going on that Sydney is an all code city like it is something unique?

Time to learn the facts Melbourne is an all code city too if you didn’t notice.

2 Rugby code teams
2 Soccer teams
A basketball team

Wollongong Wolves bid rejected as FFA provides expansion update

The relegation system your talking about works really well in the EPL & UK Rugby League (Super League). Has been real exciting watching Canada’s Toronto Wolfpack aiming to make the top level.

So I agree, it would definitely bring more fans knowing teams like North Sydney Bears, Newtown Jets etc could be back in the NRL. Could be options for New Zealands Wellington Orcas to be part of it too.

Probably would be hard reworking these teams from being feeder clubs. And getting a following for reserve grade clubs in non heartland areas like Perth and Adelaide. Saying that, if it can be done in Canada. Anything is possible.

An alternative to the NRL expansion

Clipper sounds very jealous lol

Toronto Wolfpack bring a new era to rugby league

Well they have gotten crowds of 7 thousand in Toronto for Wolfpack games. And they have a good chance in making the Superleague.
What you fail to realise is Rugby League is a far more marketable sport than AFL at an international level.

Rugby League has professional clubs in
Canada
England
New Zealand
France
Australia

AFL is still yet to grow out of Australia despite being a much older sport.

Toronto Wolfpack bring a new era to rugby league

Well they survived the season and playing to make it into the UK Super league.
They have had crowds of 7,000 with support from the local Canadian press.

Meanwhile AFL keeps flogging those no interest games in China.

Toronto Wolfpack bring a new era to rugby league

Haha that elf is not so wise.

Moving house? All NRL clubs that will be at a different home ground in 2019

I thought they were a really good local act.

The NRL continues to go farther in lightness

Clipper there is no way Toronto is going anywhere. Rugby League has a bigger presence in Canada than ever before actually.

I’m meanwhile waiting for AFL to actually get a professional team outside of just one small country.

Rugby league bosses probe 2025 World Cup

If they have lost their Sydney base, why is AFL always shown on the low rating 7mate in Sydney while the NRL is shown on Ch 9?

Why is the AFL footy show always shown after midnight here?

When channel 9 stops showing NRL at prime times in this city, I might actually take your comment seriously lol

Let me count the ways I hate the Storm

You guys did well with Inxs a few years back. Can’t beat a rock band.

AFL locks in Grand Final entertainment

You must have been either living in another city or hiding under a rock.

I’ve seen plenty of Roosters fans walking and driving around.

New stadiums alone won't solve attendance woes

Just like Melbourne. It caters for other codes too. If AFL is not your thing.
You can watch the Melbourne Victory or Melbourne United in the A League.

You can also watch the Melbourne Rebels in the Rugby as well as the Melbourne Storm in the NRL.

Also Melbourne has Melbourne United in the NBL Basketball.

This is great for an all code city like Melbourne.

New stadiums alone won't solve attendance woes

Melbourne is an all code city too just like Sydney. So your not really claiming anything intelligent as usual.
