There is no way anyone can argue that Wright doesn’t see Cunningham in his peripheral vision while running towards that ball. None.

All he had to do was commit to not trying to take a mark, and putting his right arm out – perfect for a guy who is as big as he is, and who appears to naturally jump off his left peg – to knock/tap the ball towards 2 teammates who are BOTH the next closest players. He does pinch hit in the ruck, after all.

That is a reasonable alternative to what he did, and one that was well within his mental ability ‘in the heat of the moment’. Players make that exact decision multiple times per game. He didn’t.

Agree it was not deliberate. Probably influenced by his coach’s instructions for the week. Simply clumsy. Call it careless.

Wright learns fate as massive hit on Swan sent directly to Tribunal

g’day @Macca. how’s it goin!?

Chose this post (among several!) to weigh in on your many hits…..

Mate – in short, you’re wrong. Please let me describe. Like a few others here, I was actually at the game, and I’m someone who genuinely looks at the crowd size every game and make a point of ‘guessing’ the size – so I reckon I’m fairly well versed on this exact topic. I make acquaintances (friends?) by asking those sitting near me to guess the crowd size with me. Dorky, I know…but I don’t care. Not scientific, just based on 20 years of attending Swans games (94 – first game) and Tests.

I get that ‘on telly’ you saw lots of blue seats. So did I…in person, as part of my routine to ‘guess the crowd’. Like you, I was surprised at the number of empty blue seats. Like you, I heard it was a ‘sell out’…

But I had us at around 38k despite the blue pockets. Definitely more than 67% (your claim) full. Definitely. easily. hands down.

Aside from that – mate, it was a success. We Sydney/NSW supporters love that the AFL is taking this great game around the country – so that we can all share in how awesome it is. So please – ditch the gripe, champ (“just think round 0 is a joke”).

Fella, I got to the game 2 hours early. I supported the Swans marching to the ground from their HQ. There were thousands on Driver Ave. It was like an Ashes or India Test. My Dees mate who was with me joined in (he didn’t even kick Errol’s shins, which he threatened to do). I soaked it all up.

Isn’t that what our game is all about??!

And I’m a fair-weathered Sydney sports fan – AFL and Rugby (check out my posts/comments on the Roar) mostly, and a good interest in NRL. Promise – it was crickets in Sydney this week about the NRL last night. Total non-event.

The good game AFL was celebrated hard last night in Sydney, and rightly so. The crowd was excellent. Who gives a toss whether it was 83% or 66.6667% full, honestly!

If you’ve made it this far – that’s a swipe at you. Pull your head in. It’s about our game!

More meaningful games, more eyes on screens and more fun: Why 'wildcard weekend' is an absolute no-brainer

Yep.

More meaningful games, more eyes on screens and more fun: Why 'wildcard weekend' is an absolute no-brainer

No from me. Rewarding the majority of teams in the comp with a shot at Finals is not a good look

Seriously, there is no downside – when it’s done properly/well.

Swans supporter, and have to agree Boo. We need an onballer bull – too many young skinny’s, and reliance on them ‘running faster’ if they get their hands on the pill. Need a mid bull (aka Kennedy), and a big bopper down back (it was P.McCartin who was the difference for us last year), to be consistently competitive in this comp. I’m waiting for Gus Sheldrick to grow. He’s our future…but it’s 4 years away. In the meantime, we will be up and down as we meander between getting bullied by opponents, and running around opponents. Be interesting to see how the faithful stick fat while we work through it.

Footy Fix: How McQualter's masterstroke and a soon-to-be-suspended ruck resurrected Richmond's season

I strongly suggest going several steps further. (1) Identify and prioritise “player o/seas transfers” as a key strategy to player development (think of the personal professional benefits when offered to an 18yo who is choosing their path) and overall improvement in Wallabies and SR – and make it an Aussie point of difference. Remember it goes both ways – we can bring in talent from o/s to bolster our SR squads. (2) Prioritise the roles (coaches, support staff, players) that most need it – on probably a 3-5 year horizon (cos it will change, right! E.g. we need better fullbacks right now here, and would it be beneficial if one of them spent time in a settled and strong Euro environment??), and be tactical with it – driven by Wallaby need first, then SR second. Build those l/term relationships with o/seas clubs. (3) Hard-wire it if you need. E.g. “up to 3 people per SR squad will go o/seas”, and/or “up to 3 people will come from o/seas”, and time-based (e.g. “up to 10 over this 4-year period”). That kind of thing. (4) Adjust the Giteau Law to reflect it (e.g. “up to 3 o/seas players with 60 caps are eligible blah blah, PLUS one who is on an o/seas transfer”).

If Noah L was one of these (and he’s a cracking example of it), then RA absolutely MUST put some guidance and support around him for this, rather than find out he’s signed elsewhere (with a Top 14 club) cos he didn’t get selected in a Wallaby or Wallaby A squad. E.g. proactive and clear instructions on what we need him to develop; how we want a club to help him; regular monitoring and feedback; and most importantly, clear comms and expectations of ‘how long away, and when we want to have you back’ and reinforce ‘we see you in our future, and this is how – go grow and learn’.

So many examples of where it is beneficial. Jed Holloway the most recent and obvious.

Surely most of this happens already?? If not, that’s just infuriating!

Just a few ramblings from me! Carn’ you Wobblies – let’s get the Eddie Special Smash and Grab going, and BBB (Bring Back Bill – yes, I dream big!).

Interesting view, Tom. I think that, though, overall it would have unintended consequences that just muddy the waters. A change like that will cause squabbles that wont be of overall benefit when balanced against the current “suspension, and you’re out of contention” position.

Agree with others though – the Brownlow is becoming an ‘elite’ (mids only) thing. I’m a Swans fan and I can tell you that while I love Parker, Mills and Rowbottom; my heart goes with #rampefever, and recently Blakey (8 years…proof!?) for what they do for my team. Not that either will get within cooee of the Top 10 on Brownlow night.

Can Sydney bounce back from grand final defeat, or is this all they've got?

Not sure there is any context. None. Ever.

Yep, I had the same “stats” reflections as you. Pies were excellent, and I saw first hand that belief and enthusiasm to chance themselves. Didn’t see it a few weeks back. I put this one down to Swans not taking their chances (Heeney!), and the opposition maximising theirs and staying resolute. Our first half won it. One goal in the final quarter!

AFL Finals Focus: They made it by the skin of their teeth - but here's why the Swans can still conquer the Cats in the big dance

McDonald rucked the centre square, Heeney the forward half. Reid is crucial, fingers and toes are crossed (plus he deserves his time). Ladhams should be delisted (big call, I know – but we have a tight “no DH” policy, and he failed it big time). McLean is the better all-rounder to come in. Amartey seems to have a magic touch, but I will take dependency first, just for this week!

Thankyou, good read. Agree with almost all of it (FWIW).

Re this one – “and Mapimpi had the last laugh, albeit on the naughty chair”. My muse to that is …only because it came second; nobody will be punching “that mapimpi try from sydney 2022” into YouTube in the future. And even if you do (as I just did…) the search returns “that mapimpi tackle”

Seven All Blacks, six Boks and just one Wallaby and Puma make our TRC team of the tournament so far

Very settled team/squad, Angela. Few injuries this season. Makes a mountain of difference. The experience and quality in the VFL team attests to this, and is impressive.

Carn Bloods. Will be cheer cheer-ing at the game.

ANALYSIS: Why Lord Laurie is still king of the contact zone

I am with @Brett. Focus the discussions (and interest overall) on the SR comp, and Aus teams – strengths, weaknesses, opportunities. Improve that and the Wallabies will pick themselves come the last few weeks of the comp. I am a Tahs supporter from way back, but in the frustrating Daryl G years (that followed the decades of Board-led crap, self-back-slapping and mediocrity) I simply gave up. I vowed never to go to another Tahs game until they decided to play as a team. Instead I focused on the Reds and Brumbies, and a general idea of the Rebels (and now the Force). I feel much better for it. I’m headed for a Tahs game soon…

Wallabies squad selection was largely predictable but mostly pointless

Give me the rock please, @Nick.

Tom Banks is back. He was outstanding on the weekend. Needs something to land for him internationally to give him that hit of confidence, and then he’s off.

Petaia, Campbell and Hodge in reserve. Sounds good. Kellaway after that, then possibly Harrison.

Jordan Petaia vs Will Harrison in the quest to be Wallaby fullback

Been way too long, this Aus wait for an international-standard #8.
In Toutai we salute – and reminisce!
We’ve been frustrated by the consistency of so many – the likes of Lyon, Lopeti T, Isi, Radike S, and Palu. Not convinced by a bunch of others that toiled but simply were not the standard. Then teased by McMahon coming of age – phwoah that nostril busting game and run v the AB’s reminded us what was missing.
Samu, Valentini, Harris, Wilson – c’mon lads, let’s get back to that level. Wells and Anstee – push ’em hard. Will be watching closely.
No international team goes well without a world class #8.

Are the Waratahs the real deal in 2022?

Very interesting. The GRO component will be really intriguing. On the face of it, it sounds like-looks like a genuine attempt to work together for the greater good of the game. Fingers crossed!

Hi ho Silver: NZ Rugby gets massive cash injection from private equity

Yup – I thought he smoked it. Professionally owned the issues, the (his) team, and their feedback on JL.
I am left with the overall feeling that this is really all just about CA being fabulously hopeless in how they managed JL’s contract. The ex-player brigade were mostly worried about his public treatment…and their frustrations grew towards the current players. The whole saga highlighting the change in attitude that has happened over the XI’s (shock horror) 25 years!
For example, compare Warne’s patio smokes to Pat’s commanding that booze be removed from the podium for his mate.
Now – can we PLEASE talk about the Pakistan Tour! How exciting!!!
