Great article. Funny how culture plays a part in all this.
Being raised in Wigan it was a statement of fact that Billy Boston and Jim Sullivan were gods. Didn’t see them play but met Billy many times. (Both Welsh by the way)
Cam Smith is a future immortal and his games record is extraordinary, but I think the histories of players, many from Australia and New Zealand, who plied their trade in the UK, is somewhat undervalued.
Not an immortal, but my favourite player ever, was Kiwi Graeme West… Great man. I remember a trip to Wembley for the Challenge Cup final in the eighties. A big banner said ‘Graeme West has laid on more balls than Joan Collins’
UNFORGETTABLE 😛

Nearly Immortals: The best of the rest

You have a point with the obstructions. When a slavish fixation on a flawed rule trumps logic and game feel the sport is in trouble. Let’s not forget that the players are 100kg+, running at pace, under fatigue… brushing the shoulder of a defender, four out from the line break, 25 metres away, murders the spectacle and the physicality of the game.

‘Bunker damaging our game’: Stuart calls on NRL to strip video reviews back to contentious tries only

I enjoy the pressers more than the game too sometimes. It’s a guilty pleasure tbh.
Agree it has to be reviewed normal speed, should have a limited amount of views, should be the ref who makes decision, on field, watching the big screen with us all.
Seems to work better in the SL to me. Less shocking decisions.
Generally agreed that the touchies are almost pointless in the modern game. Used to be a key role, running on, flag lifted, assisting the ref’s. They are now terrible.

Fair to say Capewell doesn’t get towelled up often… 😛

Capewell joins NRL list of all-time bizarre off-field injuries after hurting neck drying himself with a towel

I agree. Bateman is a genuine star. And I agree that Ricky isn’t a a Bellamy or Robinson. But I doubt there are 14 coaches that are currently as good as those two anywhere. They are both sensational at their jobs and seem like sensational blokes too. So, if a ‘lesser’ coach gets the bullet, I’m not too sure that there are many great options out there…

Of course, sometimes people just need a fresh voice to get them going… At least Ricky looks like he’s totally committed?

By the way, I reckon Whitehead is still elite. Love how he plays…

'Small' NRL clubs may not get close calls, but their coaches don't get calls for their heads either

I agree. It’s a poor look getting your laundry out in public when you are not even playing… would Bennett be interested in the kid?

NRL NEWS: Raider sorry for Anzac disrespect, Dolphins poach Cowboy, Bellamy pushes Papi for Blues

I like Ricky’s passion. He is entertaining. Everything you say is true and I reckon Starling could be a star. But, the Coach is ultimately accountable for all of it. Spate of injuries? Is it recruitment? conditioning, training? Aging roster? Is it recruitment. Salary cap management, development? It all sits with the coach ultimately…
As a pom I’ve enjoyed the English flavour of Canberra. But when it goes wrong, there is the additional issue of homesickness I guess?
Every year some teams have to be at the bottom and it isn’t possible for each coach to be successful

Dangerous and cowardly…? Calm down…
Dangerous…? NRL is a risky business to be involved in… and there would have been 20 infringements worse than that on the weekend. Cowardly…? Paul, I don’t reckon there is a coward in the whole NRL playing group. NAS puts himself out there every week. He isn’t a coward.

Off the field there is some horrible stuff goes on, assaulting women etc… cowardly for sure… but, crossing that white line and dealing with NRL punishment on live HD, is more than most people would consider. I thought the way the Eels and Storm lads played that match was bloody brilliant. Tough and fair and not too much rubbish.

Totally agree. As an ex pat pom in Melbourne I was amazed at the lack of atmosphere and particularly singing. 90,000 at the MCG, Collingwood Essendon… old and bitter rivals… sooo polite.
No singing!
YNWA at Anfield, the community singing at Wembley before the Challenge Cup, Wigan Saints… its spine tingling… you can hear a pin drop at times during Australian sport.
Often wondered why the singing didn’t emigrate with the people and the sport?

'This isn’t a COVID thing': Atmosphere is the missing component of the NRL

And Rapana and the other big Raiders lad were horrified and went straight to Hughes’s aid. Tough hombres, fierce competitors, but good blokes.

Thurston: 'No defence' for Harawira-Naera shocker

As an Australian born elsewhere I have been beyond frustrated at the parochial coverage of the olympics. Extraordinary

Is the Seven Network’s Olympic coverage hitting the spot or missing the mark?

This creased me up… someone set him up big time! Very funny

Classy Storm dismantle Knights on the Gold Coast

I agree that we need incentives in the cap to hold on to players that you have developed and breaks to keep players at the end of their careers too

Forget the rules, this is the NRL's biggest problem

Huge potential loss for the Storm…

Craig Bellamy is keen to keep Dale Finucane

He lights up the Dragons for sure and, it’s not like they are dripping with flair.

My guess is simply that Hook is an old school, bash ’em up, defence wins matches kind of coach, and unfortunately, Dufty couldn’t tackle a good dinner… he might get him back after a stint at the Broncos, when he’s 34/35 years old…

Matt Dufty has proven the Dragons' decision making is madness

Good points TB. Do you know the percentages of actual tackles made? My hunch is that there are less low tackles made and this might impact the stats?
I do fear that the game will dramatically change due to adaptations made to protect the head… its inevitable but worrisome. Ultimately, playing professional rugby league is, in and of itself, reckless, dangerous, and not for the faint hearted. It’s part of why we all love the spectacle… but I am sickened when I see a Pap, or a Teddy, lying prone on the deck, like any right minded person is…

Phil Gould urges NRL fans to "read the research" on concussion. So I did...

Totally dumped! Terrible decision…

Were the Bulldogs dudded by this controversial captain's challenge?

100% agree.

Jarryd Hayne may belong in prison, but removing him from the NRL’s record books solves nothing

Gus delivers some strong words on NRL suspensions and HIA rules

So a lot of people on here are now suggesting that after a star player has been collected across the chops, regardless of injury, he must be swapped out? Or if he stays down for a couple of seconds, could be anything, winded? Then he is swapped out? We are then punishing the victim again here.

The NRL should have avoided this HIA Storm

Quelle surprise!
Ridiculous…

UPDATE: NRL officially confirms Suaalii exception

I guess some changes will be an improvement and some will be fizzers… we will wait and see but the two point field goal worries me… we have had many classic last minute tries over the years from all over the park that go straight to the highlights reel .. far more exciting than a drop goal attempt, and more likely to present a result to instead of GP.
I don’t like the constant changes. What next? Trampolines on the ten metre lines so you can bounce over the defensive line?

Two-point field goal included in new NRL rules
