I hope the Mariners survive and thrive.
For the game to thrive, we need real football clubs with history and real supporter bases rather than expansions and franchises.
But then I am old-fashioned

Who should replace the Mariners?

I think Josh makes some excellent points.

Clarkson has always used his position to enhance his team’s prospects. The way he does it is disingenuous, but he will think he is doing his job – and he probably is. The AFL CEO needs to be a lot smarter about how he responds and how he is seen to respond.

Free kick to Hawthorn.

As for the state of the game, I am enjoying it less than at any time I can remember. I can’t even be bothered to watch most of the time.

Not sure why.

Believe it or not, more free kicks for Hawthorn won't fix footy

As a Spurs fan, I would obviously prefer that he stay.

But your comments demonstrate a problem with top level football now.

No club should get trophies as a formality. Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich are unhealthily dominant in their home competitions. Man City and PSG are under FFP clouds.

Filthy moulah $$$$$$$$$$$

Time for Harry Kane to spurn Spurs and win some trophies

Interesting article Adam, thank you.

I am hoping that the WA NPL can restart soon. We are really a Perth metro competition without the travel challenges Queensland has. That’s hard for a part-time competition.

Clubs doing it tough as Queensland NPL restart hangs in the balance

Funnily enough, I was in a similar situation.

20 years ago I contracted a serious disease and was advised not to have a flu jab.

In all that time, I can only remember getting a bad flu twice, once in the northern hemisphere (England) and once in Perth.

I don’t have religious or ethical objections to the flu jab, but I question how effective it is. I also try to keep healthy and I don’t like the idea of injecting that sort of stuff into me – an illness or four, suspended in something unpleasant.

This year, my new employer (aged care) strongly suggested that I have the flu jab. The government mandated that no one has access to aged care facilities without the jab.

So I chose to get the flu vaccination. I felt a bit off for a couple of days, but there it is. If I hadn’t had it, I could not have done my job.

And that would have been a consequence of my choice. We all make choices and they have consequences.

Cartwright can say no to his flu shot, but the NRL should say no to him

Spot on Alec.
Nothing to see here, move along.

What exactly was Jurgen Klopp disrespecting?

I agree with your conclusion, but I reckon that it has been the best league for a couple of years.

The football is a pleasing combination of technique and physicality, but the crowds are what make it so enjoyable for atmosphere (I echo the late great Jock Stein here).

I’d also argue that Juventus has been as dominant in Italy as Bayern in Germany.

Why the Bundesliga is Europe’s most exciting football league right now

Interesting article.

My 2c is that a geographic identity is preferable and Dandenong would be perfect.

If that happens and it is Team 11 not City, then it all depends how long the investors want to have a feeder club in Australia, principally for developing younger players – but that could be forever!

I am surprised that more overseas clubs haven’t invested in feeder clubs in Australia – if I was the owner of Newcastle United in the UK (cue Mike Ashley jokes), I would have an investment in and alliance with the Jets.

The existential threat to Melbourne City

Interesting article.

Port have both smashed and been smashed by the Eagles over here and they do generally seem inconsistent.

Wonder what the Brisbane and Port experiences do for Voss’ chance of being a senior coach?

Teague, Shaw, Ratten and Longmuir took four spots ahead of Voss and Sumich – and you don’t often get so many vacancies.

What's going on at Port Adelaide?

A lot of people care and cared about the Force.
Don’t get us started on that.
But I agree with your overall point.

Wellington Phoenix get screwed every week and nobody cares

Very well put, if I may say so.

I enjoyed the article though and good on Tom for hanging in there.

Now that the strange Joyce era is over, I suspect the club will improve with a strong youth policy and exciting overseas imports.

The Hearts marched in, but how many have marched out?

Loved it.

And I am not even interested in League!

Peter V’landys accepts brief to fix everything by last week

No sporting franchise has ever succeeded on the Gold Coast.
Odds remain against this one.
I’d rather a Tassie team, for all the economic challenges.

Do we even want the Gold Coast Suns to succeed?

Jack

I agree with everything you have written in this thread.

Sadly your thoughts are grounded in common sense, rationality and humanity, none of which are applied in these type of institutional situations.

It is just too hard for institutions to apply a principle-based approach when a rule-based approach is safer from litigation and easier for people to understand.

I am an Eagles fan and loved watching Willie play. It is so sad for him and his fans. But he’ll be lucky to play elite sport again and I fear for his future.

There are Catch-22s all over this story, but if there was a genuine problem he should not have been allowed on the field after the first drug test – and if there isn’t a genuine problem, there isn’t a genuine problem.

Modern society has a lot of wowsers, politically correct people and compliance clipboarders.

Rioli involved in second ASADA bombshell

Spot on Spanner.
Never easy.

The Eagles' uneven premiership defence ends without much fury

RIP Danny Frawley.

Remembering Danny Frawley

That’s true Jack, they do.
As an Eagles fan, let’s hope this year they are right!
I think it will be a close game and we could well get up, but equally I could see Geelong bouncing back. Surely they can’t concede that many from basic defensive errors again this week?
I predict Brisbane will beat GWS at the Gabba quite comfortably.

Straight-sets exits await Geelong and Brisbane

Fascinating article Ken – thank you for sharing.
RIP Chester.

Springbok World Cup hero Williams passes away at 49

Thanks for the article – I enjoyed reading it.
This year, for the first time in a while, I went to see 3 WA NPL games and 1 FFA Cup game.
I really enjoyed it.
Happy, diverse crowds. Quality play. Good bars. Nice atmosphere, rain or shine.
In WA, the Sunday Times paper doesn’t even report the results of NPL WA (I get them from the FlashScore App), such is the stranglehold of AFL on the state.

Why you should watch grassroots football

I agree Chris.

Australia should put our best foot forward by playing batsmen in their preferred slots and attacking with the ball.

Starc’s aggressive left arm variation could really make a difference when we need a breakthrough. He would have cleaned up that tail around Stokes last time.

The Ashes: England vs Australia, fourth Test preview, prediction

I fear that the whole idea of a financially sustainable national second division will prove almost as hard as reconciling quantum mechanics with general relativity.

A much better supported AFL with a major TV deal can’t afford it.

Over here in the West a boutique stadium is one with steel rails all the way around the pitch.

Boutique stadiums are a must for a national second division

Nah – I would have. I support Australia, but am a sportsman, so would comment either way. And Australia were fools for wasting that review! And the umpire should have given LBW and the Ashes to Australia right there!

The technology issue is an important one for all sports – and I care way more about my two football codes than cricket.

I agree that the technology hasn’t made a mistake – it is the humans who frame the rules for its use and, in some (fewer) cases, who interpret its results.

And you cannot have a one size fits all approach. Cricket can afford the time delay; AFL to some extent can, but soccer cannot. It’s a momentum thing….

Stokes revives Ashes with extraordinary match-winning ton

I’ve been to the Stadion and it is a top-class stadium – way better and safer than Subiaco Oval was at the same time!

Union Berlin's lesson for the A-League

Yes, such as it was with the Stasi-sponsored Dynamo being the Berlin side that won every year. Stealing best players, notoriously bent referees etc.

Union Berlin's lesson for the A-League

I see the same issue emerging in regards to the AFL and the WAFL clubs – in a couple of years, we’ll likely have a Fremantle Dockers reserve side and a 10 team competition, which means one of the traditional clubs will go to the wall or have to merge.
Arguably there are too many clubs in England for the population, but when you look at non-league as well (and the National League is effectively the 5th Division now), I’m surprised more clubs haven’t failed.
So the solution is to send more TV money down the pyramid (in AFL and EPL) to make sure that the grass roots of the game are protected.
But I also take Waz’ point that there is only so much that can be done. You can’t insulate clubs against bad business practice/asset-stripping any more than you can every business/company in an economy.
Regulation & fit and proper tests can only achieve so much – though they could step in a lot earlier if a Tax debt is unpaid.
If it’s your club – and soon it will likely be mine – it would be terrible.

The Premier League is papering over the cracks in English football
