Stokes was brilliant – fair play to England.
But it cannot be right when an umpire makes blatantly the wrong decision, technology proves it and nothing is changed (yes, it’s Australia’s fault under the rules, but the rule is not right). The point of technology is to get the right decision – it didn’t.

Stokes revives Ashes with extraordinary match-winning ton

As a paid-up member of Union Berlin, thanks for mentioning them! I’m struggling to see the A-League link though.
As a Spurs fan, I agree that the current handball rule is against the spirit of football and that the current application of VAR is damaging fan enjoyment. On the other hand, so far it’s worked pretty well for Spurs v Man City and with your resources, we need all the help we can get.

Spurs fan here – I think VAR is wonderful!
Nah, seriously, the way it has been implemented is not good.
Comparing to tennis and cricket doesn’t work either, sorry James.
Now, technically you nearly always get the “correct” decision with VAR, as we did on the weekend.

The bigger problem is the handball rule. In the spirit of the game, what happened is not handball.
Unintentional, incidental.
How on earth can it be handball for an attacker and not for a defender anyway?
So the jokers at the FIFA Rules Committee have a lot to answer for.

Back to VAR. IMO, you just want to eliminate blatant errors.
So the answer is:
1. Goal line technology to the referee’s watch and
2. An expert watcher, ideally another referee, with access to TV footage who looks at the incident and has 30 seconds to press a button that goes to the same watch saying “handball” “offside” or whatever because he/she has decided “beyond reasonable doubt” that the referee has missed something.

How to fix VAR

They did well in the first game against my Spurs with an honourable loss, but the key to staying up (as Dean Smith has said) will be making Villa Park a fortress.

Remains to be seen whether there are enough goals in the side. The midfield looks settled and Mings the Merciless could play for Barcelona on that showing!

I didn’t know about Dean Smith’s Dad – thanks for letting us know – dementia is a terrible thing.

Will Villa's huge gamble pay off?

I do know what you mean by this line of thinking.
In many ways the EPL is a metaphor for globalisation. People look at globalisation differently and for me, the benefits outweigh the negatives, although I am not blind to the downsides.
As a Spurs fan with one of our own leading us and a few coming through, I probably get the best of both worlds, but I do miss how it used to be in the 70s and 80s.
Then again I can watch grass roots football in Australia, be a paid-up member of Union Berlin and watch every European League – even the MLS – on TV.
Another way of looking at it is that the love of money is the root of all evil. Alexis Sanchez and many others …. FFP doesn’t work – PSG and Man City stroll on, while Birmingham City get a points deduction, but that is a topic for another day.

The English Premier League is slowly killing the beautiful game

My 2c:
Arzani wasn’t ready then and isn’t suited now to Scottish football. He should move to the continent.
Rogic is a potentially world-class player whose body just keeps letting him down. Again, the blood and thunder of Scottish football probably isn’t the ideal backdrop for his talents.

Star Socceroos duo under threat

I just have this strange feeling that Leeds had and missed their chance last season. Derby won’t be as good without the Chelsea loanees.
West Brom should be solid and have acquired a decent manager. Warnock is I think going for the record of EFL promotions with Cardiff. Not sure who I’d tip for the third promotion place – based on last year, I’ll say Bristol City.

A 2019-20 EFL Championship season preview

I agree with your analysis.
Did you have 3 factors or there were just 2?
I like the use of technology, as long as it is done quickly and well.
This last year has been very frustrating (Spurs fan disclosure at this point) in terms of VAR and clarification is needed.
The inconsistency of key decisions on handball in the penalty area (PSG v Man Utd, France v USA in WWC, Liverpool v Spurs in CL and probably lots of others) has not been good.
Seems to generally work well for offside now.
I like transparency to the crowd at the ground too.

VAR, handballs and the ‘natural silhouette’

Actually (and I’m not sure how widely known this is) the abuse really hurt Hadlee.
He didn’t show it publicly at the time but it brought him to the edge of what in those days was known as a nervous breakdown.

The Final Quarter: A timely reminder of Adam Goodes’ integrity and tenacity

I just watched a wonderful game of football. The West Coast Eagles beat Melbourne narrowly in Alice Springs. Melbourne were plucky and unlucky – but for some wayward kicks on goal, they probably would have won. In the last quarter, the Eagles lifted like the reigning Premiers they are, even in the absence through injury of their inspirational captain.
The Eagles had five indigenous players, with Watson making his debut at AFL level. At the end, our Jetta exchanged his jumper with Neville Jetta of the Demons.
The crowd was black and white, red & blue and blue & gold and seemed extraordinarily happy to be watching. The sun was shining and the ground spectacular in its beauty, with red mountains in the background.
Seriously, it was as good a couple of hours as you could spend – and I was only watching it in my lounge room in Perth. My friend Martin was lucky enough to go there to see it. The great Gilbert McAdam was running the boundary for the TV company and caught returning local hero Willie Rioli at the end for an interview.
My conclusion is that Australia is a wonderful country where everyone is welcome and diversity & inclusion is appreciated and celebrated.
Everyone will have to make their own minds up about whether Adam Goodes contributed to this wonderful event positively, negatively or not at all.
You and your wife would probably benefit from listening to some music from The Specials to understand what it used to be like in England in relation to racism.

The Final Quarter: A timely reminder of Adam Goodes’ integrity and tenacity

I’ll believe $80M extra to spend when I see it……

How A-League clubs should spend Tony Sage’s predicted $80m windfall

Nice, balanced article.
I’ve moved on (support Australia anyway) because, well, there it is in the record books.
So many better ways to decide as you say – another super over, position after round robin, head-to-head. It is just laughable that ruling bodies can get this stuff so wrong. In good news, on most of the better deciders, we know England would have won anyway.
Kiwis a class act in every response – maybe their PM is a reflection of the whole country?

Final outrage valid, but also a veneer for the bitter

It was a wonderful game. I was as disappointed as the next Eagles supporter with the result, but there it is.

Eagles coach vows not to get angry with players

Very harsh (wrong) to issue a yellow for that challenge.
Arms were not up, didn’t hit his head and yet the Peruvian rolls around like he has been shot in the head.
Isn’t that what VAR is for? Hopeless.

Brazil young gun breaks down after being sent off in the Copa America final

No doubt USA deserved to win, but that is not a penalty.
At most it should be an indirect free kick for dangerous play (high foot).
Yet another final damaged by poor human decisions behind VAR.

Dutch fume as contentious VAR penalty helps USA clinch Women's World Cup again

I am a Spurs and Union Berlin fan and member but I am neither Jewish nor of the Far Left (or Far Right).

Education is the key. I am all for diversity and inclusion and enjoyed the atmosphere at (say) Melbourne Croatia when I took my girls a few years ago. At Sorrento (WA) now, there is quite a British feel to the crowds.

All part of the fun if done in the right humour.

New identity policy takes Australian football back to the future

I thought my team, the Eagles, were absolutely superb in the conditions.

As for Freo, I don’t think Lyon can ever win them a flag because he exudes this aura of “I know best” despite all indications to the contrary.

Now this was only one game where everything went right for one team and wrong for the other, but ….

They had enough opportunities to win last night but were so far behind the Eagles’ skill level and tactics that it was embarrassing.

Just about every forward entry played to the Eagles’ greatest strength – defensive marking by Gov, Barrass, Shep and Hurn.

And the recruitment! Big money for forwards with obvious physical and/or mental weaknesses in McCarthy, Matera, Lobb and Hogan (I know he didn’t play last night).

Anyway, not my problem, but I know many Dockers’ fans think similarly.

Dockers not panicking despite derby hiding

I would ignore Barrett – his views are as valuable as any other internet troll

Barrett’s Showdown comments are an indictment on the AFL media

I watch much less televised football nowadays, yet I have more time. And when I do, it is often without the commentary.
Multiple issues here:
Bias/conflict of interest. I don’t even need to give an example because everyone reading this knows who they are.
False hyperbole: BT, Basil, Bruce.
General crapness: partly in the ear of the listener, but there are a few.

If I had to pick someone I like listening to it would be Saint Nick: honest, brave, insightful. Just like he played.

Time to let the old ways die

Really enjoyed the read – thanks!

The night old soccer came home

Fair, if not lucky to play again this year IMO.
Repeated, known breaking of a rule that is there to protect the integrity of the sport.
You can’t tell me his club haven’t done the education or that he was unaware of Collingwood players’ history of this sort of thing.
However, the irony of AFL itself and many clubs making massive money out of betting is not lost.

Was Stephenson's punishment fair?

The Argentinian goalkeeper in the 1-0 loss to England made several outstanding saves.
The Jamaican goalie was good in the first game but suspect in the second.
All judging by my 3.09 minutes of highlights anyway.
