The NRL example is important, because it shows what influence the broadcaster has with the scheduling of the sport.

They paid the money, so they get to choose what they want to show and that’s why you get 18 nights of Broncos on a Friday night on Channel nine in one season.

Will this happen with Fox and the A-League and what can the clubs and FFA do about it?

Who will decide on the A-League's Friday night football?

Thanks Fuss,
Despite what the CEO of SBS says, SBS don’t schedule matches, FFA and Fox do and Fox tells FFA what time to play the games to fit in with Fox’s broadcast schedule.

I haven’t seen any definition from either party on what the “biggest match” means.

Also my point is, who chooses the “biggest match” and what happens if Fox doesn’t agree.

I believe SBS are going to take the Fox match feed with their own SBS commentators, to save broadcast costs.
If there is disagreement on which game Fox broadcasts on Friday, then can’t see SBS winning any arguments over Fox.

Who will decide on the A-League's Friday night football?

If the game gets higher TV ratings the clubs and FFA don’t get any more money, Fox and SBS does from its advertisers, because advertising rates are based on the ratings.

Whereas if the attendances are higher, the A-League clubs and FFA get more money and not Fox or SBS, assuming ratings have not gone up.

Therefore Fox wants higher ratings, while clubs want higher attendances.

Who will decide on the A-League's Friday night football?

Thanks Alexander
and for your support of the Wanderers.

Your situation is a little different and I assume that with the live Friday night game on FTA there will be a whole new audience that the A-League will try and target.

If the games aren’t good quality or without that great atmosphere then they won’t attract as much following. So I think the choice of Friday night games is now very important.

But agree that the best way to see a blockbuster game is at the ground, if you can get tickets.

Are you all Victory fans with a death wish for Heart?

There are 3 derbies every season. Even the away team gets part of the gate receipts, sales etc and they don’t have any travel or accommodation costs, so it all helps the bottom line.

Heart are one of the few clubs to make a profit, yet they had some of the lowest attendances of the season.
If that’s not good management, then please give your reasons.

Heart say no to South Melbourne offer

Don’t think so.

They are very well managed and as soon as they start to win something they’ll get bigger crowds and bigger profits.
They also get 3 lucrative Melb derby games every year.

Heart say no to South Melbourne offer

Heart made 761,200 Euros profit on the transfer market, about $1M AUD.
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/melbourne-heart-fc/transferbilanz/verein_25580.html

They sold the following players last season:
Rutger Worm, Kristian Sarkies, Maycon, Alex Terra, Adrian Zahra, Craig Goodwin, Eli Babalj, Brendan Hamill, Curtis Good, Michael Marrone and Aziz Behich.

Their best deal was 650,000 for Curtis Good from Newcastle United.

Heart say no to South Melbourne offer

The AFL, NRL and Super Rugby are run by the governing bodies and will never be independently owned and run, naive to think they ever will.

The FFA has answered all it can about the fateful WC bid, everyone knows its corrupt and who the criminals are, but FIFA is structured so that no one ever gets caught.

The FFA have also lifted their game significantly, have resolved their major issues satisfactorily and appointed a competent CEO to get things moving.
Sure there are still lots of improvements to be had, but we are light years ahead of what we had before the FFA was formed.

The FFA is not responsible for high registration costs. Out of a $230 rego fee, the FFA will only get $12. The vast majority of the fee goes to the insurers and the football club, who charges whatever they can get away with or need to charge.

Echoes of the past in a season to remember

kellett,
the table lists the transfer balance sheet for SFC and shows they have done pretty well out of it making 1.5M Euro profit.

Sorry, it was Fussball who estimated Perth and Sydney FC lost between 10-12M, not you or AFR.

Need to be careful with all these stories estimating how much money A-League clubs lose and I tend to ignore them till the FFA puts out its financial reports later in the year.

Its not a profitable competition yet, but its not as bad as some people make out.
Just like the commercial media BS about Wanderers fans terrifying the good people of western Sydney and its not safe to walk the streets any more.

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

The shortfall is met by the owners, but the CBA is set by the FFA and the PFA.
I wonder if the owners will get more say this time?

Will we get an A-League strike against the owners, like in the US, when players don’t get the increases they were after.

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Apologies kellet,
wasn’t trying to implicate you just have my doubts about the story.
The author is a Melbourne journo who usually writes about horse racing and AFL.

I get my back up for 2 reasons
– people who know nothing about football usually writing BS negative pieces about football, they are paid to do it
– the number of trash articles over the years quoting how much the A-League and FFA is losing ( 25M to 100M) and predicting the demise of the A-League as we know it.

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Fletcher,
that link to the Fitz files doesn’t mention anything about A-League losses, or am I missing something??

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Good management – Heart turned a profit with the lowest attendances in the league.

Imagine if they can make the finals, increase their player support and merchandising with a big name marquee and really rival MV in the Melb derby, the potential is there for a healthy increase in profits and probably why they didn’t sell shares to SM.

Who has the best long-term record in the A-League?

Are you being serious 🙂

Most clubs release about 4-6 players at the end of every season. Probably a couple more will go or leave before the pre-season starts.

As a Wanderers fan if I had to choose 4 that had to go, they would be just about my choices.

Dino was a bit of a character and scored a couple of goals, but he’s not really the striker to fit in with Poppa’s style of play.

There’s a rumour in the fan forums that one of the new potential owners have plenty of money and will sign a big name striker.

Wanderers release four A-League players

Sydney’s transfer market balance sheet
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/sydney-fc/transferbilanz/verein_8054.html
and a profit of 1.5M Euros over the years.

Tony Pignata said the club has lost about 20M since it joined the A-League which in 8 seasons is about 2.5M loss per year.

He also said that this year with ADP will be a big turn around on previous years and he is hoping to break even within 2 years.

Where does the Fin Reviews figure of a 10-15M loss this year for SFC come from?

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Kellett
Melbourne Heart have just released a statement today saying they will make a profit at the end of the financial year, so this Fin Review article is wrong.
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/melbourneheart/news-display/Melbourne-Heart-FC-Statement/66386

What other figures are wrong?

I think the figures are just made up to suit a story.

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Strange article from the Financial Review, which is usually more thorough than that.
More like a collection of rumours and innuendos.from a Melbourne journalist.

What is the source of the information?
What do these figures represent?
Is that an overall loss or football operations loss?
Does it include all sources of revenues and player transfers?

How could the A-League financial details be completed and released so quickly – the grand final was only played last weekend and CCM are still engaged in the ACL, so what are these figures they came up with?

Usually the FFA doesn’t release its yearly figures till September.

Timely reminder the A-League still has a long way to go

Mariners make the round of 16 but disappointing result.
CCM just didn’t score when they had their chances and let the Reysol forwards have too much room.

I’d like to think one day we can stop making excuses about how much money they have etc.

The Qatar football association has as much money as it wants, but they still can’t beat anyone and will be severely embarrassed when they host the 2022 WC.

There are a lot of reasons why Japanese teams are better than us and its not just money.
We are getting better but still need to improve in a lot of areas and be more ruthless in attack.

Thanks Wasp for sharing your story.
The Big Match and Match of the Day were my favourite programs on the ABC when I was growing up.

There sure is something about the Wanderers and the way they seem to have done things the right way, like the colours and shirt design, the name, the stadium, fan forums, family days, kids football clinics.

The Parramatta council have also said that they have added millions to the local economy and local businesses.

Thanks apaway for sharing your memories and congratulations for playing for the Owls.
What position did you play?

I also played semi-professionally in Australia as an attacking midfielder a few years back now and wish I was 17 again nearly every day of the week, so I could give the A-League a crack playing against he likes of DelPiero, Heskey, Ono and Liam Miller.

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

I hope Holger got the message and our results improve.

We must win our last 2 home games and by big margins with clean sheets.

A draw in Japan would also help.

It's time David Gallop faced some uncomfortable questions

A lot of people get conned out of their money when bidding for hosting rights of FIFA tournaments.
I’m a little surprised Mr Lowy was one of them.

The whole process needs to be stopped and a fairer and just system put in place, even if its based on a rotation system among the confederations or on a FIFA fair play points table or whatever.
Anything is better than what we have.

The way FIFA is structured, they will never be found guilty of anything.

The 1971 FA Cup Final was the first one shown live by the ABC in Australia. That’s why so many people remember it.

Scroll Down to the comments from “Aussie Ash” who saw it live in Australia and seems to have a similar experience to me.

Cheers Deakie,
Its been a real community thing and working in and around Parramatta the vibe is there and its really taken off.

Its been great for the kids too as they are starting to follow the game, pick up on some role models and attend the fan days and kids holiday football clinics.

Its given a lot of benefits back to the area,

Maybe have a different A-League team for every day of the week. 🙂

Love the rivalry and looking forward to the next derby, whenever or wherever that is.
Looking forward to next season already and can’t wait till the FFA puts out the A-League draw and the plans for the FFA Cup.
