I have an extra long bath and scrub when they play Victory. 🙂

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

If the game is rigged, don’t play the game.
There is no honour among thieves.

While we would have loved to have a WC here, the whole system is rigged and we had no chance to win.
Should have spent the money on local football projects and maybe start up another A-League club or two.

We should not have put a bid in in the first place. All decent footballing nations should boycott the next vote in a mass protest.

It's time David Gallop faced some uncomfortable questions

About right.

FIFA WC Committee Delegates make a lot of money on the side promising to give you their vote, but because the votes are anonymous you can never tell if they actually really voted for you or not.

But when you only get one vote it becomes obvious which corrupt monkeys ripped you off.
FFA’s fault and they were naive to play the game with them.

This is no way to choose the venues for a WC Finals tournament.

You can tell where the money is and how corrupt the system is when you look at the next 3 venues.
2014 Brazil – no one voted and it was “given” to Brazil.
2018 Russia
2022 Qatar

Russia and Qatar are two of the worlds biggest oil and gas producers and have lots of money to give away in brown paper bags.

It's time David Gallop faced some uncomfortable questions

Speaking of Aussies playing professionally in England didn’t our own David Carney play for the Blades.
What names did you call him when he joined?

Born and raised in Sydney, he’s currently listed as unemployed with a transfer fee of 800,000 Euros.

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

Its a while ago, but I remember as a kid staying up late to watch a lot of English football and FA Cup finals and the Socceroos in the Germany WC Finals – 1974 that is.

It was shown on the ABC before SBS came along. They have been a good supporter of football over the years and now do the W-League and broadcast all A-League games live on radio;

Good on you Mals for Sticking with the Mariners.

I hope they have reached their turning point too with a Golden Toilet Seat win finally in the trophy cabinet.

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

That’s the same problem for all teams.
SFC were losing fans and then ADP comes along and nearly doubles their attendances.

Any sport, people will come along if the team does well and also if the occasion is a final or a derby.

I still followed SFC when they didn’t make the finals.

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

Thanks Mid,
The English football on TV and Brian Moore’s The Big Match got me hooked on football, not the local NSL game at that time.

Some great childhood memories there and for some reason some names I will never forget.

But the A-League got me interested in the local game, along with the Socceroos.

Congratulations Mid to the Mariners and good luck in the ACL.
Bring back the trophy for Australia.

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

Obviously the EPL teams I’ve switched between were not towns that I was born in or have any family tradition to.
I guess I was mainly following the Aussies in the EPL.

I haven’t switched between a lot of A-League teams, if WSW hadn’t come along I’d still be an SFS member.

I’ll still go to see a few SFS games and they are my second team no matter who they are playing, except maybe WSW. 🙂

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

Towser,
I appreciate your situation and point of view, most of the traditional football fans in Europe and South America will stay with the same team all their life, especially as you say if its their home team. Probably their fathers and grandfathers followed the same team all their life too.

Its a bit different in the A-League.

I’m born and bred a Sydneysider, but when the A-League started just 8 years ago, there was only one Sydney team to follow.

I wanted the league to be a success, so I went along to SFC games and followed them as much as I could.

When WSW came along, we had 2 teams in Sydney and a lot of us started to follow WSW. I was born only a few miles from Parramatta Stadium.

Its something I wanted to start discussions about and what others felt, because I know there are many others like me.
I’m sure the same thing happened in Melbourne with Heart fans.

I’ve been called a lot worse than “fairweather”, especially from my old Cove mates, but I’m sill following an A-League team from the town where I was born.

Does anyone know when the season kicks off?

They said September and then they were going to move it to Oct so it was further away from the NRL and AFL GFs.

I guess they have to integrate everything so the timing is just right and the revenues maximised.

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

Wonder who chooses which games go up on a Friday night?

I can’t see Fox allowing FFA to schedule the big derby games on a Fri night and lose their big TV audiences?

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

Didn’t FFA hire him, because of his great ability to manage youth players and his uncanny ability to spot emerging talent?

I think he’s just trying to qualify any way he can with the same old cattle, to keep his job and huge bonus for qualifying.

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

If we make it to Brazil, he wants the A-League contingent to be match fit right up till June.

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

Absolutely amazing effort to beat the Blue wings in Korea just 2 days after a grand final and following 16 hours of travel.

What a great result if the Mariners progress through the ACL,

Good luck boys and don’t come home till you capture that trophy for Australian football.

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

Gallop has already promised that there will be more marquee players in the A-League this season.

With the increased media deal money all clubs will be reimbursed at least their salary cap costs.

I'm going to miss the A-League this winter

Vince nice thoughts and football is the winner.

But really, no Wanderers team or fans in the winners list, surely they have achieved a great deal in their first ever year and are bigger winners than MV and SFC.

And what about Tony Popovic is his first year ever as a head coach in charge of a football team?

Winners and losers from A-League season eight

Will be an interesting “era” for the Mariners all right.

Graham Arnold looking to go to Europe, Matt Ryan and Ibini trialling with Lille and the new financial backer talking about moving out of the central coast to Geelong.

The Mariners won’t exist as we know them for much longer, if this keeps up.

The end of a journey, the beginning of an era for Mariners

The Western Sydney Wanderers were followed by tens of thousands of devoted fans in a street parade through Parramatta today. Parramatta Council has hung banners throughout the city’s central business district in a sign of support for the Wanderers.

Parramatta lord mayor John Chedid gave the Western Sydney Wanderers the key to the city for the club’s remarkable inaugural A-league season at a celebration in Parramatta today.

Tens of thousands of passionate Wanderers fans marched through Parramatta singing and cheering for the team, following them as they waved from a bus leading the parade.

The team was presented the key in front of screaming and excited fans at Prince Alfred Park where Fairfield band Exit Row performed their debut single, Welcome to our Wanderland, which was inspired by the club and has become an unofficial anthem.

Cr Chedid said despite the defeat on Sunday, the Wanderers well and truly exceeded all expectations in their first season and brought western Sydney together.

“In our eyes, the Wanderers are champions and to have won the Premiers’ Plate and made the grand final in just their first year in the competition, is worthy of special recognition,” Cr Chedid said.

“We’re very proud of how far the club has come in such a short period of time and I’m confident that the Wanderers will continue to be a success in the A-League,” Cr Chedid said.

There was an array of entertainment at Prince Alfred Park, including live music, amusement rides and a Wanderers highlights reel from the season.

Players also be met excited fans and signed autographs.

The Wanderers have expressed their gratitude for Parramatta Council’s support but look forward to a holiday before the A-League pre-season starts for season 9 and their second only year in the league.

Mariners win, but did penalty decisions cost the Wanderers?

If Holger fails to qualify for Brazil (that’s still a possibility) the FFA will definitely pump for a local coach to replace him – between Ange, Poppa and Arnie.

But who would want it 5 years out from the next WC in Russia.

If Holger gets sacked, probably van Egmont, Culina Snr and Ernie Merrick will put their hand up for it.

If Holger gets us to Brazil it will be 2016 before we see Arnold in the picture.

He seems very keen to try his luck in Europe and has good connections with his former clubs in Holland.and Belgium as a starting point and also Japan/Asian clubs are interested in him.

Could Graham Arnold return to the Socceroos?

Nick Fitzgerald – 45 A-League appearances 9 goals, originally from Wahroonga Sydney

Rocky Visconte – 39 A-League appearances 3 goals, originally from Adelaide

The A-League grand final wasn’t on FTA so not a fair comparison.

The A-League grand final was shown live round the world to tens of millions of viewers.

Landmark ratings victory for A-League

The FFA started up WSW and are running them and supporting them financially, but about 2 years sooner than they wanted to, because of one Titanic Clive and his vendetta against the FFA.

They’ve done a pretty good job, especially Lyall Gorman.
With a budget of 5M they are only less than 1M out of pocket in their first year, because they were so successfull.
They are in discussions with investors to sell the club for between 15M and 20M.

Not a bad effort.

No announcement on the PA, couldn’t hear the girl singing the anthem.
Once we realised, we stopped singing and sang the end of the anthem.

Certainly no disrespect intended.
