Thanks Lofty. Yes, it is hard. It took me some time too, over 20 years. Asking for help seems more commonplace now, at least in the AFL which is great. Hopefully that carries through to the rest of society.
The black dog and the red ball
Good on you Geoff. I really appreciate the feedback. It’s a tough thing to understand let alone describe.
The black dog and the red ball
Good point, Paul. I’ve certainly been guilty of making comments that in hindsight may have affected people. Whether on stage or in print I do my best to ‘punch up’ and leave the personal out of it.
I don’t yell at individuals at the footy. I’ve found most who do are trying to project their own unhappiness or achieve some sort of satisfaction they couldn’t as sportspeople themselves.

Best to speak to a doctor BigAl, but what worked for me was ultimately therapy with a psychiatrist for two years and medication (which I still take now).
Treatment will always depend on the individuals biology and history. Also, a bit like getting anything else fixed, it’s important to see a professional that you trust.

Thanks Daniel. My pleasure. Like they say in my game, ‘Tragedy plus time = comedy.’ Though with writing perhaps it’s clarity.
The black dog and the red ball
Interesting point. Someone much smarter than me would need to comment. There could be a Phd in it. To my knowledge depression doesn’t discriminate, but perhaps the more scrutiny, the more likely. Suffice to say, I only kicked a dozen goals in 10 years, though admittedly I was only really scrutinised by myself and that was bad enough.

You actually have more expertise than you might think Dougie. The compassion and understanding you showed is about all the expertise most of us could expect from a friend. It really helps.

Thanks Caroline. Apologies for the tardiness of my response. I don’t always read all of the comments but in this case I’m glad I did. My part was easy. The credit goes to you and Cassie for being the honest, courageous and determined people that you are.
Sam Newman – no laughing matter
50 years is a good body of evidence Mango Jack. Another flag or two would be a more than reasonable bet I would’ve thought.
What a time to be alive! Hawthorn are finally bad at football
Good on you Jim. I’m told the immunotherapy drugs can work wonders. Glad to hear you’re going well mate. Keep it up.
A real sporting role model: Why Jarryd Roughead is one to follow
Thanks mate. Great song. Couldn’t agree more. Not much Freddie ever got wrong on the music front.
Grant Hackett needs to have a conversation with the mirror
Thanks Pope. The Warney point, I was trying to convey that if he did have mental health problems his odd and at times bizarre behaviour would be easy to explain.
Depressing coverage of a misunderstood illness
Thank you Stewie.
