“Both teams are proving to be stable powerhouses in the HAL, one with loads of money behind them, the other a resurgence of fan support and playing with flair that was there in their first season.”

Are you having a laugh – stable powerhouses. Need I remind you that Brisbane is still under the administration of the FFA and that Gold Coast can barely pull 2,000 people to their games. To be a powerhouse you need to be a success both on and off the field and neither of these two teams meets this criteria in the least.

Gold Coasting along just nicely (Part Two)

“Yet instead of exciting the masses, this season is falling into line with what I call “the Victory cycle”: a faltering campaign on the back of a more successful one.”

“The Victory Cycle?” The win the double in 2008/09 comes second in both premiership and the championship in 2009/10 and is currently sixth, half way through the 2010/11 season. Halfway! Also hardly a cycle. Why don’t you talk about the Adelaide, CCM, and Brisbane yo-yo cycles instead? But you won’t because Victory bashing gets you more comments because every fan including many of our own are all too willing to sink the boot in at the earliest opportunity purely based on our previous success.

Yes, we are going through a bad patch but it’s not the end of the world. I would ask how many other teams would be successful with three of their squad coming back from knee reconstructions. Not too many I would wager.

Victory not living up to name or reputation

Just because this is the only derby you have experienced doesn’t make it the biggest or most intense derby. It would be like me saying that the Boca/River derby is the biggest because I was in Buenos Aires for one of them. Each to their own but don’t try and one up someone else just because you support one of the teams – it smacks of small mindedness and lack of tolerance for other fans. Much like not having a tolerance someone else’s religious views . . . oh wait.

Old Firm rivalry simply cannot be beat

Real Madrid v Barcelona isn’t really a derby in the true sense of the word, but am surprised that Corinthians v Palmeiras outranks Fluminense v Flamengo in Brazil. Also surprised that there are no Italian derbies in there.

Old Firm rivalry simply cannot be beat

This is a very blinkered view of what constitutes a derby. Reading this you would assume that derbies only occur in the British Isles. Every year we seem to get an article of this type that claims that this is the best derby in the world that always seem to occur around the time Celtic play Rangers. There are derbies in all parts of the world that make the “Old Firm” look like a picnic and not between two teams that monopolise a league.

Old Firm rivalry simply cannot be beat

Are you struggling for topics to talk about at the moment, Mike? At this time of the season, flares are a complete non-issue.

Flares don't belong in the A-League

“Ernie Merrick’s men, with their Scottish theme song and kick and rush football, aren’t their team and never will be.”

Contrary to popular belief and it appears yours as well, Melbourne Victory do not play kick and rush football. Whilst you have had a go at Fairfax for making baseless comments you go right ahead and make one of your own.

Fairfax's AFL troupe sour first Heart beat

Two things you seemed to have missed Tony. How was van Bommel allowed to stay on the pitch after his studs knee high challenge in the lead up to Holland’s first goal? It beggers belief as to how van Bommel doesn’t pick up more yellow cards for some very ordinary challenges. And surely wasn’t van Persie interfering in the play in an offside position for their second goal.

The Oranje finally take the initiative

“I thought you guys are supposed to be cultured, and Im sure you can find alternative means of entertainment.”

That’s my point. Is there any alternative means of entertainment?

Qatar will host the 2022 Football World Cup

Italy, France and Australia weren’t the host nations at this World Cup . . . oops

Qatar will host the 2022 Football World Cup

If this does happen, this will be the worst World Cup from a fans point of view ever! No ability to drink outside games and I can’t seem them publicly showing the games, especially if its 40+ degrees all the time. Probably would also see sponsors disappear in droves as well and this is where FIFA should see sense.

Also you said Blatter will bring the South Americans in. I can’t see that happening, they would be more in favour of a US tournament (similar timezone) plus there is still that old blood regarding Havelange.

Plus Qatar would be a bigger disaster than South Africa as a host nation.

As Midfielder said, I would be very surprised if it did happen.

Qatar will host the 2022 Football World Cup

He coached Argentina in the 2002 World Cup where they crashed out at the group stage. Will be hard to tempt away from Chile if he takes them further into the tournament.

Lesson needs heeding in manager search

If he takes Chile well into the tournament it may be hard to tempt him from the job. I do however believe he is on the short list.

Lesson needs heeding in manager search

Agree totally about Elia. Made the Dutch look a whole lot better when he came on. Hopefully he gets a start in their next match. To be honest I didn’t see much of di Maria playing for Benfica in the Europa Cup. One Argentinian that you didn’t mention is Aguero, who surprisingly didn’t get a run out against Nigeria but with so many strikers in the squad it’s little wonder.

Thoughts on the 2010 World Cup thus far

Tony, I’m going to have to disagree with you on your assertion that Angel di Maria made an impact in Argentina’s first match. For one who was dazzling as part of that all-conquering Argentina U20 World Cup side of 2007 he had little impact against Nigeria and was in fact a little disappointing.

Thoughts on the 2010 World Cup thus far

What’s wrong with bandwagoners? You can only hope that some of them catch the football fever as I did when I saw bits and pieces of the 1986 World Cup. Bandwagoners shouldn’t be despised they should be encouraged.

Which is bigger: Champions League or World Cup?

I bought my ticket on Wednesday and it says 39,749. Come on people buy some more tickets!

How many will turn out for Socceroos farewell match?

Quite frankly The Fanatics are an embarrassment at any sporting event they attend be it at the World Cup or Wimbledon.

Socceroos fans: please don't embarrass us!

It was more a general comment than one directed at the author of this article.

Would Billy Slater look good as a Carlton Blue?

Why would one natural assume that he would want to play AFL. I wish AFL people would get it out of their small little minds that not everyone wants to play their game. Come to think why would anyone want to switch to a code with no chance of international representation (that hybrid game against Ireland doesn’t count). If he was to switch codes, it is more likely to go to union be it here or overseas.

Would Billy Slater look good as a Carlton Blue?

At least they had the balls to see the error of their ways. Actually for two games it’s not too bad now.

Are we trying to entice fans or drive them away?

Two words for you. Kristian Sarkies.

Should Victory reconsider Merrick's position?

If you are going to make such a grand statement I do think you need to elaborate. Being based in Melbourne (I can’t speak for yourself) I can say there is very little momentum for the Heart at the moment. There is very little coverage in media and only a minimum number of ads around the place. The signing of Aloisi, barely raised a ripple.

Should Victory reconsider Merrick's position?

The fact that there ethnicity is the same is purely coincidence. It was the best example I could think.

You are also forgetting that there was clear cut penalty that was denied. Whilst not disagreeing that we were beaten tactically throughout this ACL campaign is not necessarily a requirement to throw the baby out with the bath water. Unlike Adelaide, we will be able to hopefully build on our efforts for our next shot at it next year.

Should Victory reconsider Merrick's position?

What is this considerable momentum generated by the Heart you speak of? Please elaborate.
