Are you serious? Considering the factors that he had to deal with this season to only premiership by a point and the championship on penalties, Merrick’s season can hardly be faulted.
As for the handling of the Langerak issue, I think you’ll find most Victory supporters are in agreement with how this was handled. We are not Brisbane Roar who will offload our brightest talents to the first bidder. We want the best deal for both our club and the player and have never stood in the way of a player wanting to leave.
Now to your ACL aspersions, sometimes it takes teams and managers to adapt to a continental stage. Look at Sir Alex Ferguson as an example, it took him a number of attempts to achieve any real success on the European stage with Man U. As for Aurelio Vidmar, whilst adapting quicker to the ACL environment has pretty much failed at A-League level.
Until the FFA either reschedules the season to avoid the clashes we encountered this year or gets rid of them altogether then Merrick’s priority will always be the A-league.

Should Victory reconsider Merrick's position?

It is a clear example of why Melbourne is one of the better run clubs in the competition. They have never stood in the way of a player’s transfer and in most cases look to get the best deal for both club and player.
I’m hoping that Langerak stays for another season or do a deal with an overseas club that sees him stay on our shores on a loan type deal. In order to develop, Langerak needs regular game time (as this season has proved) and I’m not sure shooting off overseas now is his best option.
P.S. I would never trust anything an agent would say regarding a transfer.

A-League clubs right to block European transfers

So a team who scores 47 goals in 27 games last season (which is seven more than the next best team in Perth and twelve more than champions, Sydney) does not play good football? Combined that with the fact that they scored 39 in 21 games the season before that also defeats your misguided argument.

As for Muscat being a hack. Again you are wrong as he probably plays the ball out from the back better than any other defender in the A-League bar Simon Colosimo. So off you go to join your “many” friends on the good ship Melbourne Heart and let’s see how good their style of play is. If Pim Verbeek’s style is anything to go by, you’ll be looking for a new team soon enough.

How Heart can differentiate themselves from the Victory

Please define a typical british style of play. Just Merrick is Scottish, don’t define his style of play as such.

How many “British style” teams have the most creative and attacking player in their midfield?

How Heart can differentiate themselves from the Victory

Then that would make two teams in Melbourne playing good football wouldn’t it, so no real point of difference.

How Heart can differentiate themselves from the Victory

I do indeed. It is definitely the Cruyff way, something I wanted to allude to in my original comment but ultimately left out.

It's the little players who are starring in world football

“And what of Barcelona, who have long believed in the Wenger way, well before Pep Guardiola and Messi got together”

If anything Wenger is playing the Barcelona way, not the other way around.

It's the little players who are starring in world football

When you look at the ticket numbers actually allocated to members of clubs for the AFL GF it is a pretty low percentage when compared to say an A-League where club member numbers are not restricted at all.

Finally we're developing a football culture in Australia

I’m not sure if I would class myself as hardcore, but I walked out after finding who the man of the match was. Did I want to stick around and see our arch-rival and their fans celebrate their win? No and I wouldn’t expect them to either if the roles were reversed.

Finally we're developing a football culture in Australia

The fact that Melbourne fans left also showed that there were real football fans at the Grand Final. Unlike both AFL and NRL Grand Finals (more so the AFL) the vast majority of people are attending are corporates and are just there for the spectacle. This contrasts with the A-League (and I hope it stays this way) where the vast majority of people attending are fans of the game.

Finally we're developing a football culture in Australia

“The FFA has been more accomodating of MV this season than of any other club you care to mention. They locked in the home semi-final for them prior to the premiership beind decided and then, by Merrick’s own admission, the FFA appealled to the AFC to reschedule their ACL matches for them.”

That statement is absolute crap. Going into the last round MV were always going to finish in the top two so they would have some say in where and when the first game was played. They clearly stated that they would play the first game at home no matter what the outcome of the premiership. This was combined with the fact that whoever their opponent was to be would most likely want the second leg at home (fat lot of good it did them anyway 😉 )

As for the broken leg statement, they always said it was a ‘suspected’ broken leg. Everyone took that is was broken as a given. I’m pretty sure after the true extent of the injury was discovered they let everyone know but people like yourself obviously chose to ignore this statement.

Stubborn AFC are hindering the Champions League

Aren’t all these fixture problems being caused by the fact that the ACL has had to be moved forward to accommodate the World Cup. Therefore these issues should only really occur every four years and by then they may have sorted it out.

Stubborn AFC are hindering the Champions League

A campaign in which Melbourne were missing their two best players (Hernandez and Thompson) for all but one game.

Back on Reds bandwagon as Leckie and Flores fire-up

Many Adelaide fans must be wondering why they can’t perform like this in the A-League, particularly this last season.

Eamonn, as for your comment regarding Merrick would Adelaide have had the same result playing away from in the middle of a finals series with injuries to key players. I think we will see the best of the Victory team after they finish their finals campaign noting that their next game will be two days after the second leg of the major-semi final and if they do make the grand final they have another three days after that. At this stage they don’t have the luxury of a decent break between games as does Adelaide.

Back on Reds bandwagon as Leckie and Flores fire-up

Would agree that Boca and River is huge in Buenos Aires. Have been there once when it was on, city pretty much ground to a halt. However, the Flamengo-Fluminense clash in Brazil would have to run it pretty close.

Is this the greatest derby in world sports?

As I’ve said in numerous other forums if the game is ever going to stand on its own two feet in this country we can’t keep trying to avoid the codes. It’s a fact of life in this country. The August start allows for an excellent tie-in with in the EPL. All new leagues go for a stagnant period in terms of crowd figures, research on the J-League shows the exact same thing and that’s without any code conflict.

FFA must heed Pim's warning and move season

danny,

that would be correct – I am zizou from fft.

A-League’s powerhouse club pulling away from the rest

Pippinu,

Have been the reading the articles over here for a while now, especially Tony’s. Certainly did have a blast last night, have spent most of this season standing in South End and enjoyed being really close to the action.

It will be interesting to see if the stadium management choose again to bring in the retractable seating, especially since the next home game is against Sydney. It would truly make for a great atmosphere and last night was a pointer to what we can expect at the new rectangular stadium.

The North/East/South/West End chants brought back memories of our last ever A-League game at Olympic Park where we clinched the Premiership. Can we have that every home game please?
