The group of death at the Basketball World Cup gets underway on Sunday evening as the Australian Boomers take on Canada in Dongguan. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:30pm (AEST).
The Boomers come into the World Cup having split their two warm-up series against Canada and the USA, taking on game off each nation, before convincingly losing their only game in China to Germany.
The Aussies also have a fitness concern to Andrew Bogut, who twisted his ankle in the game against Germany, but the talk is that he will be right to play.
While there is no Ben Simmons, the Boomers are a genuine medal chance at the World Cup, however, getting out of a group featuring the Canadians, Senegal and Lithuania may prove to be the toughest challenge before knockout basketball begins following the second round.
When Australia played Canada in Perth, there were clear chemistry issues for the Boomers, however, they gradually become less and less pronounced with each passing game, and they were starting to look good by the end.
The emergence of Jock Landale has been huge for Andrej Lemanis’ side, while Joe Ingles, Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills have all shown some nice touches.
However, when Australia beat Canada, they didn’t have Cory Joseph. The Sacramento guard will provide a huge boost to the national team, although may take a while to get going given he will have limited time with the team before the cup starts.
However, away from Joseph, the understrength and criminally underrated Canadian team was led through their warm-up series by Kevin Pangos, who was strong not only against Australia, but against New Zealand and the USA in Sydney.
Alongside one of the best players in Europe was the emergence of Kyle Wiltjer in the paint, Andrew Nembhard and Phil Scrubb.
Those players and their shooting hold the key for Canada, with the North Americans needing to make this a high-scoring game if they are to get this done against the at times hot and cold Australians.
What they may struggle with is defending a two-man centre rotation for Australia, featuring both Bogut and Aron Baynes, given they both sat out one game of the warm-up series.
That may determine which way this one goes, as well as the output of Australia’s NBA shooters.
Prediction
Australia should take the win. Canada are going to take a while to get used to Joseph running the point, and with Mills and Dellavedova providing creativity at the other end of the court, they will get home in a tight one.
Australia by 6.
