New Zealand will look to keep their perfect start to the Cricket World Cup going when they move to Taunton for a clash with a so far disappointing Afghanistan outfit. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10:30pm (AEST).
The Black Caps have been relatively strong across their first two games of the tournament, smacking Sri Lanka around in their opener, before battling past Bangladesh.
New Zealand’s opening match against Sri Lanka, which was played in Cardiff, proved exactly what they are able to do, and it’s the pace attack they will turn to again tonight against Afghanistan to try and be dominant again, with an eye to a healthy net run rate boost.
The Afghanistan side are not all that far behind others in the spin bowling department or indeed facing spin, but when it comes to facing good quick bowling, it’s another story.
Trent Boult destroyed Sri Lanka in the opener, while Lockie Ferguson bowls with genuine pace, and the Afghanistan top order may struggle to fend that off, with the pace attack likely to be the difference.
New Zealand already sit two and two and at the top of the order, but another win over Afghanistan is crucial if they are to play knockout cricket at the back end of the tournament.
Of course, the top order batsmen of New Zealand, led by captain Kane Williamson and opener Martin Guptill will also be licking their lips at the prospect of short boundaries and a weak pace bowling attack.
Afghanistan have struggled with the ball in their opening two matches, being belted by Australia, before only six wickets between Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi kept them in a constest against Sri Lanka.
They sit zero and two, and if they are going to register their first win, then early wickets and the pace bowlers – Dawlat Zadran and Hamid Hassan – holding their end of the bargain is crucial, as hard as they will be against the powerful Black Caps on a ground like Taunton.
Prediction
The Black Caps are favourites and rightly so. They should be able to run away to a big win here.
