Final score
Afghanistan 207
Australia 3/209
Australia will get their Cricket World Cup campaign officially underway with something of a danger game as they take on the spin-heavy attack of Afghanistan. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10:30pm (AEST).
The Aussies come into the campaign on the back of eight straight ODI wins after they fought back from 3-0 down against India and then swept Pakistan 5-0 away from home.
They have caught form at the right time, and with the exception of one or two spots in the 11, their side is reasonably settled, even with the return of David Warner and Steve Smith to the fold.
Australia were strong in their warm-up games as well, going past England and Sri Lanka, with the form of Smith in particular looking good.
The biggest battle today will be dealing with the Afghani spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi, however, Australia are more equiped to deal with it than at any point in the last decade.
Warner, Smith and Glenn Maxwell are all sensational players of slow bowling, while Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja have improved against it as well. The short boundaries in Bristol, if they can be patient enough to bat for time, will also help their cause.
For Afghanistan, playing in Bristol may be the worst possible start to the tournament, because while their three spinners are three of the best in the world, the straight boundaries are exceptionally short and defending them will be a real struggle.
If they can bowl well though and the pitch gives them anything, then they will be right in the contest, with early wickets the key.
It feels like the only way Afghanistan will win is to bat first though and have Australia go too hard, too early, because if the Aussies do bowl first and set up an easy chase, then it’ll be all over.
Afghanistan’s biggest problem is their batting. While they have some big hitters – led by Hazratullah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad at the top of the order – and some solid batsmen like Rahmat Shah, it’s rare they are going to have faced an attack with as much pace as Australia.
Fending off Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins with the new ball will be critical if they are to get a serviceable total in this one, but realistically, the class difference between the two sides should be enormous.
Prediction
Afghanistan might be able to cause a scare, and at any rate, I reckon they will make this a lot closer than the vast majority would give them credit for. Hard not to tip Australia to get their campaign off to a winning start though.
