The oldest rivalry in cricket will fire to life for the second time at the 2019 Cricket World Cup, as Australia and England put it all on the line in the second semi-final at Edgbaston. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
It doesn’t seem to matter what Australia do, Edgbaston isn’t a happy hunting ground for the side.
From Glenn McGrath treading on a cricket ball back in 2005, to being rolled cheaply for nothing in the last Ashes summer and having 480 powered on during an ODI here 12 months ago, it’s a house of horrors for the Australian side.
The Aussies now come to Edgbaston with fitness questions everywhere. Usman Khawaja is out, Shaun Marsh is out, and the fitness of Marcus Stoinis is up in the air, while Justin Langer has hinted that Glenn Maxwell could miss out.
Despite all that, the changes might actually make Australia better off. The absence of Usman Khawaja means Steve Smith will bat at three, and coming off the form of Aaron Finch and David Warner, who are both at the pointy end of the tournament for runs, it gives Australia a formidable top three.
The addition of Peter Handscomb means there is another power hitter in the middle order as well, so the side feels better balanced. In saying all that, they are coming off an ordinary loss to South Africa, so there is plenty to do.
The English, on the other hand, have come home with a wet sail under pressure. Given they have beaten India and New Zealand in what were essentially knockout games, their confidence will be sky high.
Even so, they must bat well, and winning the toss will be vital. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow getting off to a strong start and not losing wickets up front to Mitchell Starc is critical, while their attack against Australia’s fifth bowling option also becomes vital.
Holding wickets in the shed so their middle order can tee off will be the other key for England, with hitting power down the order that needs to be used.
However, they don’t bat quite as deep as everyone thinks, and a strong start for Starc and co would leave Australia right on the front foot.
Prediction
This is such a tough match to tip. Australia’s squad is up in the air, which is definitely half an issue to consider, but they will have the confidence having beaten England earlier in the tournament, and with the form of Finch, Warner and Starc, I reckon it’s going to be another trans-Tasman final.
Australia in a thriller.
