Fresh off dispatching Australia, England will be looking to continue their unbeaten run at the T20 World Cup when they take on Sri Lanka in Sharjah. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).
The number one-ranked T20I team in the world, England could not have been more impressive to start the group stage. Three consecutive thumping wins over the West Indies, Bangladesh and Australia leaves them atop Group A with a whopping 3.948 net run rate, and means a win here would almost certainly assure them of top spot in the group for the semi-finals.
While their fearsome batting strikes fear into the hearts of their opponents, it has been their bowling which has been more devastating by far this tournament to date. Their potent mix of canny spinners (Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone) and accurate seamers (Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills) has seen them bowl the Windies out for just 55, before restricting the Tigers and Aussies to just 124 and 125 respectively. While Jos Buttler exploded in the latter game with a brutal unbeaten 71, the batsmen have found themselves with very little to do so far this tournament.
At the other end of the spectrum, Sri Lanka’s heartbreaking loss to South Africa has landed them in the last-chance saloon already. Having done superbly to restrict the Proteas in a run-chase of 143, led by a hat-trick from the brilliant Wanindu Hasaranga, the Lankans watched in horror as David Miller and Kagiso Rabada clubbed 18 runs from five balls in the final over to snatch a victory from their grasp.
Having had to qualify to make it as far as the group stage, Sri Lanka are far from an easybeat: and remember, they did cause England a boilover to remember in the 2019 ODI World Cup, that changed the course of that tournament. Repeating the dose, though, will be tricky: this England line-up is in fierce form, and there’s no Lasith Malinga this time to conjure some wizardry with the ball.
