India have already been knocked out of the T20 World Cup by New Zealand’s win yesterday, making this clash with Namibia an old-fashioned dead rubber. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).
Virat Kohli’s team have picked up steam in their last few matches with massive wins over Afghanistan and Scotland; remarkably, even a solid win here would see them with the highest net run rate in Group B. Unfortunately for them, defeats to Pakistan and New Zealand in their first two games of the tournament left them too far behind the eight-ball to respond.
As pre-tournament favourites, for the cricket behemoths to fail to clear the group stage for the first time since 2012 (and the format of that tournament was changed afterwards, most likely due to it) is an unquestionable failure, and leaves Team India with plenty of soul-searching to do before next year’s World Cup on Australian shores.
For Namibia, it has been probably the finest few weeks of their cricketing history. Their emotional win over Ireland to secure entry to the Super 12s was unquestionably their highlight, but in beating Scotland in their opening match of the group stage, they also ensured they won’t finish their maiden top-tier tournament undefeated.
They’re yet to be completely destroyed as well – New Zealand’s 52-run defeat their heaviest of the tournament so far – but against an Indian side with nothing to lose and plenty of frustration to get out, it’s hard to see them even getting close. Still, they’ll at least know that the majority of the cricketing world outside India will be cheering them on.
