It’s a Melbourne derby to start the new year, with the Melbourne Stars hosting the Melbourne Renegades at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of the clash, from 7:15pm (AEDT).
Two losses and a tough start to BBL|08 for the Stars, but a five-wicket victory over the Sydney Sixers last Thursday night put points on the board.
Jackson Coleman picked up three wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane and Dwayne Bravo got two a piece, as the Stars restricted the Sixers to 130 runs.
Peter Handscomb was named player of the match for his 70 off 35 balls, but the Stars will have to find runs elsewhere with the batter returning to the test squad in readiness for the fourth test.
The Renegades most recent clash was also against the Sixers, though, on a sticky Marvel Stadium wicket, it was the Sydney side who got the win.
132 runs seemed an achievable chase, but the Sixers bowling line-up dominated, including a 2/13 haul from debutant spinner Ben Manenti.
Top scoring for the Renegades was Mackenzie Harvey, who opened the batting on debut and hit four boundaries and a six.
The Renegades fell 33 runs short though, a reality check after two wins to open their season.
Seb Gotch and Jonathon Merlo join the Stars squad for this clash; Peter Handscomb and Jackson Coleman (personal reasons) are out.
The Renegades have included pace bowler Andrew Fekete and spinner Jon Holland, to replace Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tim Ludeman in the squad.
Andrew Fekete has joined the Renegades as a replacement player for Will Sutherland, who is in Sri Lanka with the Australian U19 side.
The last time these two faced up was late in BBL|07, the Stars came away with the win.
The Stars have the head-to-head advantage, with nine wins to the Renegades’ four.
