New Zealand can confirm their place in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup with a win over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. Join The Roar for lives scores from 9pm (AEDT).
Kane Williamson’s team haven’t always been at their best this tournament, but relatively straightforward wins over Associates Scotland and Namibia, following their vital triumph over India have seen them jump into second spot in Group B, with their destiny in their own hands.
The equation is simple for the Black Caps: beat or tie with Afghanistan, no matter the margin, and second spot in the group is theirs. Interestingly, their net run rate is superior to Pakistan’s, who lead the group; so in the unlikely event they lose their own final game to Scotland, New Zealand could even find themselves topping the group.
Afghanistan also remain in the hunt for that prized second spot in the group, though their path to the semi-finals is far more complicated. They’d need to beat New Zealand for starters, the bigger the margin the better, and also hope India either lose to Namibia or only win narrowly. Afghanistan’s net run rate is 1.481 compared to India’s 1.619; but the best thing for Mohammad Nabi and his team might be to just focus on winning and let the chips fall where they may.
Afghanistan were clobbered for a tournament-high 210 in their most recent match against India; but with mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman a potential returnee after missing their last few matches through injury, he might be just the ticket to team up with Rashid Khan and throw Group B into disarray.
