A rampant Pakistan are the new favourites to claim T20 World Cup glory… but an in-form Afghanistan outfit loom as a potential banana-skin for a team with a penchant for form fluctuations. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).
Two wins from two starts against India and New Zealand – their two biggest rivals for the two final-four spots available in Group B – has a semi-final berth staring Pakistan in the face. If their ten-wicket victory over India in their World Cup opener was clinical, their triumph over the Black Caps showed off the men in green’s cool heads at the death.
First, paceman Haris Rauf was masterful at the death to prevent any late-innings fireworks; then, a flurry of big shots from middle-order batsman Asif Ali saw Pakistan over the line with plenty of time to spare. With games against Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia to come, an unbeaten group stage run appears more likely than not, while even a solitary loss would almost certainly not be enough to tumble them out.
However, Afghanistan will be no easybeats despite their far more modest pedigree than India or New Zealand. They pummelled Scotland by a whopping 130 runs in their tournament opener, with five wickets from Mujeeb ur Rahman and four for Rashid Khan bowling them out for just 60. The underdogs’ spinners are lethal on the pitches the UAE has to offer, and could well be just the test to unnerve Pakistan’s in-form batting line-up.
