Australia get the chance today to bat Pakistan out of the Second Test at the National Stadium in Karachi. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the action from 4.00pm (AEDT).
At 3/251, the Australian top order took the honours on Day 1, with Usman Khawaja’s unbeaten century absolute class. To do it in his birth country made it even more special.
He was supported well by Steve Smith, who again fell with a century in sight, and David Warner. Marnus Labuschagne was run out for a duck, and his face in the sheds afterwards confirmed that a big score had got away from him today.
Pakistan employed a bizarre tactic in the late afternoon session, with their spinners bowling outside leg and the Australian batters padding ball after ball away. The result was a stalemate for about 40 minutes, leading to the only middling Australian total for the day.
On Day 2, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Alex Carey all get their chance to get amongst the runs, with the Karachi pitch not showing many tricks late on Day 1. It could well prove the best day for batting and the Australians will be looking to ensure a big total.
Although not showing many signs yet, the pitch is expected to break up later in the test match, so first innings totals are likely to be crucial.
With limited spin at the moment, Pakistan’s best chance of wickets may be through reverse swing after the ball is 20 or 30 overs old. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali and Faheem Ashraf all got some reverse on Day 1 and will be looking for more today.
