Australia face a monumental task heading into Day 4 of the second Test against Pakistan as they attempt to save the game and series. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5pm (AEDT).
The tourists are, to put it nicely, in absolutely all sorts after being comprehensively outplayed over the first three days of this Test.
Apart from Nathan Lyon taking four for none on Day 1 for the Australians and causing a minor heart attack for the Pakistan side, this has been all one-way traffic.
After Sarfraz Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman saved the innings for Pakistan, guiding them to what seemed to be a below par, yet still solid 282, the tourists fell in a heap.
Collapsing to be 7 for 90, they were eventually all out for 145, leaving themselves well in arrears on first innings.
Pakistan then proved the pitch wasn’t beyond all reasonable attempts at scoring runs, griding the Aussies into the dirt over the back half of Day 2 and most of Day 3.
They added 400 to their total, setting a staggering 538 runs for victory and leaving the Aussies 12 overs to get through yesterday – or 192 to draw the match. Of course, if 192 were batted, it’s a fair guess to say Australia would have at least 538 on the board, but then, batting for that length of time has only been done once in Test cricket during the fourth innings – back in 1939.
Australia came out all guns blazing for their 12 overs though, with Aaron Finch pouncing on anything ordinary from the bowlers and defending out Yasir Shah and Bilal Asif well when they came onto bowl.
It’s clear the Pakistani spin duo are going to be the keys to dismissing Australia, but with Shaun Marsh already back in the sheds, it was pleasing to see Travis Head come in and join Finch through to stumps, also maintaining a healthy level of positive intent through to stumps.
Will Pakistan wrap it up today, or will Australia find a way to keep themselves in the match? Join The Roar for live coverage of Day 4 from 5pm (AEDT) to find out, and be sure to get involved by dropping a comment in the section below.
