A Pakistan outfit high on confidence following their stunning thrashing of India do battle with New Zealand knowing victory will give them a firm grip on a T20 World Cup semi-final spot. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).

India found out the hard way on Sunday one of cricket’s perpetual truths: when Pakistan are on, they are on. From the moment star quick Shaheen Shah Afridi burst through both openers in a whirlwind spell to start the match, the men in green seldom looked like losing. Half-centuries from openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then saw them enter their name in the T20 World Cup record books: inflicting India’s first ever ten-wicket loss at the tournament, and securing the first for themselves to boot.

Just as important considering their history was the fielding effort: a number of superb boundary saves were made, while the catching was first-rate. Pakistan have occasionally put on that sort of performance before, but rarely if ever have they backed it up, so they have now set the bar for what we can expect from them in the field for the remainder of the tournament.

If there’s a polar opposite for the mercurial Pakistan in world cricket, it would have to be New Zealand. Cool, calm and utterly team-oriented, Kane Williamson’s team has long punched above its weight on the world stage. They were a run away from victory in the 2019 ODI World Cup final epic two years ago, while in the last edition of this tournament, they made it through to the semi-finals having stunned hosts India in the group stage.

You know what you can expect from the Black Caps: fierce hitting around an anchor in captain Kane Williamson; a mix of defensive spinners and frontline quicks headlined by the king of swing, Trent Boult; and consistent tidiness in the field. With depth to spare in all facets, the Kiwi line-up could swing any number of ways depending on the conditions, but despite heading into this match as underdogs, everyone knows this team won’t self-destruct as Pakistan have been wont to do.

If Pakistan can secure victory, then they’ll likely need just two further wins against Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia to progress to the semi-final stage – all games they’ll start as heavy favourites. However, a Black Caps triumph would put the pressure right on India, who they’ll meet on October 31 in a blockbuster clash.
