Big Bash favourites Melbourne Stars travel to Optus Stadium to take on a Perth Scorchers team full of confidence after three straight wins. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 9:10pm AEDT.
Perth and Melbourne square off in what could end up being one of the matches of the season given the present form of both teams. The Stars have solidified themselves as strong favourites for BBL|09, winning eight matches compared to just one loss.
Their most recent win against the Sydney Sixers was particularly impressive, with Marcus Stoinis smashing a record 142 runs to cement himself as the best batsman in Big Bash cricket.
For Perth the equation is simple: eliminate Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell early and they’ll perhaps condemn the Stars to just their second defeat of the campaign. Fail to do this and the Stars are once again eyeing a total over 180.
The Scorchers certainly have the attack to push the Stars all the way, with Jhye Richardson and Fawad Ahmed completely dominating the Hurricanes two nights ago, registering figures for 4-19 and 2-15 respectively.
With Stoinis in such dominant form, anything less than the complete performance from Richardson and company will see Melbourne well on their way to posting an imposing total.
Prediction
It is likely that Perth will still chase a decent total at home, which means that Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis will have to build on their good performances in Hobart if they are to chase the Stars down. Perth have had a great road trip of late, registering three wins on the trot, but now is the time to perform at home against the best team in the competition. While the Stars will play well, Perth should rise to the occasion and cause the upset.
Perth to win.
