Victoria have one hand on the Sheffield Shield trophy, and will be looking to push towards a victory in the final against New South Wales when the teams return for Day 4. Join The Roar for rolling updates and scores from 10am (AEDT).

As was the case on Day 3, we will be back at the Junction Oval half an hour earlier again today, with rain and bad light causing plenty of lost time in the last two days.

Luckily for Victoria, they already had the foot on the throat by the time any of that started impacting the match late on Day 2, and they are edging close to the Sheffield Shield.

After being 6 for 266 at the end of the day and eventually posting what looked like a par score of 288, it turned out to be well above par, with Peter Siddle and James Pattinson the men to enforce that point on a pitch which, while not easy to bat on, never looked all that difficult to bat on either.

New South Wales were decimated in their first innings for just 121, ensuring they were both behind in the match, and on the bonus points situation, which doesn’t look like it’ll come into it, given there are two 98-over days of cricket left.

The Victorians find themselves at 7 for 207, with just 61 overs possible yesterday in their second innings. They did lose six wickets, but the runs added ensures the lead has pushed up to 385, which would require an amazing chase from the visitors if they were to pull off the victory.

The hosts will also have no intention of declaring, and with the potential for more weather and light to take time away from the match, the tail will try to add as many runs as they can, batting for as much time as possible before their attack has another go at the Blues’ top order.

For New South Wales, they must take the remaining three poles as quickly as possible, then have more success than they did with the bat in the first innings. In particular, all of their top three must stand up. Daniel Hughes, Kurtis Patterson and Nick Larkin had good Shield seasons, and they hold the keys to getting the Blues off to a good start in pursuit of what will be a mammoth total.
