Sitting in second spot in Group A, South Africa can give themselves a handy grip on a T20 World Cup semi-final spot with victory over Bangladesh in a crucial clash in Abu Dhabi. Join The Roar for live scores from 9pm (AEDT).

After a disastrous batting performance saw them lose a thriller to Australia in their tournament opener, the Proteas have had to deal with controversy both on- and off-field, much of it centred around wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock’s much-publicised decision to refuse a board mandate to take a knee pre-match, to bounce back. That they’ve done is a credit to both the captaincy of Temba Bavuma and the quality of their team as a whole, with spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj particularly splendid with ball in hand.

After steadying the ship with a win over the West Indies, led by Aiden Markram’s unbeaten half-century, they got out of jail in a big way against Sri Lanka in what could prove the World Cup’s most crucial match. After having their middle order ripped out by a Wanindu Hasaranga hat-trick, the Proteas needed a hefty 15 off the final over for victory. Enter David Miller, whose back-to-back sixes, with some help from a Kagiso Rabada four that officially saw them over the line, has kept them well on track for the final four.

In contrast, three straight losses for Bangladesh means their tournament is all over bar the shouting. Having come through qualifying to make the group stage, the Tigers haven’t been terrible by any stretch: but they’ve thrown away great positions in defeats to Sri Lanka and the Windies that have cruelled their campaign.

A four-run loss to the Windies epitomised their ‘so close and yet so far’ World Cup; seamer Mustafizur Rahman conceded 19 runs from the final five overs of their bowling innings, enabling the Windies to set a defendable total of 142. Then, needing just 63 runs from the final eight overs for victory with wickets in hand, the Tigers suffocated themselves, losing only two further wickets but never lifting the run rate enough. Captain Mahmudulluh’s play and miss off the last ball needing four to win finally sealed their fate.

Adding to the Tigers’ woes is the loss of talismanic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Be it wickets or runs, Bangladesh can usually rely on Shakib to deliver, so the onus will be on the rest of the squad to chip in and make up for the veteran’s class in all facets of the game.

While Bangladesh are only playing for pride, a win – and a big one – is oh so crucial for the Proteas. They remain ahead of Australia in the group by virtue of their net run rate, but a clash with the rampant England in their final match looms large. There’s every chance they will have to win both games to keep the Aussies out of the semi-finals, but a big win here could give them the NRR buffer that just might prove enough should Australia lose one of their final two.
