Australia took command of the first Ashes Test match on day four at Edgbaston thanks to centuries from comeback men Steven Smith and Matthew Wade. The final day of the game begins at 8pm AEST, join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the conclusion to the match.

Ahead by a mere 34 runs at the start of the fourth day and with three wickets back in the hut, Australia were staring at the wrong end of the barrel at that point but in Smith they had a batsman England had found difficult to dislodge.

He had walked into this series having endured a lot over the preceding 15 months but just before that, scores of 141*, 239, 76, 102* and 83 had been his scores in five of the seven innings he had batted against England.

A first-innings century here at Edgbaston capped a fairy tale story for the former skipper but he wasn’t done yet. His team demanded another contribution from him to take them a position of safety and he delivered with a lot more.

After adding 130 runs for the fourth wicket with his overnight partner, Travis Head, he proceeded towards another century-run stand with the other player returning to the Aussie XI, Wade.

And before he finally got out to Chris Woakes – who strangely didn’t bowl a single over in the first session – he had scored his second 140 of the game, joining an elite list of four cricketers who had scored 140+ in both innings of a Test.

The lead, at that stage, was a solid 241 runs but by no means insurmountable. Wade, however, wasn’t done.

He pressed on to score his third Test match and his highest score in this format, in the process grinding the Anderson-less English bowling to dust by the time he was done.

Handy contributions from Tim Paine and James Pattinson helped Australia to a lead of nearly 400 before the declaration came.

England might have survived the seven overs bowled at them but with a minimum of 90 more to be bowled, and the target nearly an improbable one to go after on a slowing pitch, their only realistic option on the final day is to see off those overs.

The worry for England is not too many of their top seven batsmen have defence as their stock shot option.

A lot will depend on how much turn Nathan Lyon extracts from the surface, but if one were to go by what was on offer to Moeen Ali, it could further make life miserable for the opposition batsmen.
