If the Adelaide Football Club haven’t shown interest in Melbourne’s Jack Trengove during the upcoming 2014 trade period, they have not been doing their homework.

Currently injured and out for the remainder of the season with a navicular injury, former Sturt young gun and number two draft pick Trengove is yet to set the AFL world on fire.

Trengove is a classy ball user with a wealth of leadership experience, having been a former co-captain of the Melbourne Football Club.

There is no doubt that if Trengove can discover the consistency and continuity required to excel at AFL level, then he can prove an invaluable asset to an Adelaide Crows side in desperate need of greater midfield depth.

Traditionally, players of Trengove’s talent can prove quite difficult to obtain, especially for a side such as Adelaide, who have been dealt with severe draft restrictions in recent years. However, if ever there was a time to make a play for Trengove, it is now.

Only 22 years old and contracted until the end of the 2015 season, Melbourne must nevertheless be concerned with the question marks lingering over Trengove. If there is one thing that the injury interrupted career of talented Western Bulldogs player Shaun Higgins has taught us, it’s that navicular injuries can carry long term risks. Melbourne should consider all offers for Trengove before the 2015 free agency period, and with it, the temptation of a go-home factor.

Adelaide could do with another classy ball winner who can also deal damage to opposition teams on the outside, while Melbourne, currently in the midst of a major rebuild, could do with more draft picks to satisfy other requirements.

With Adelaide set to resume the first and second rounds in the upcoming 2014 draft, one could assume that a first round pick and/or a speedy midfielder in the mould of a Jarryd Lyons or Brodie Martin may just be enough to secure the services of the talented young South Australian.

The time is now for the Crows to negotiate terms with Melbourne to secure the services of talented youngster Trengove, just as the time is now for the Melbourne to cut their losses with Trengove and seek a trade with Adelaide for much-needed draft picks.
