A huge day of international rugby league continues with the first of the Trans-Tasman Tests as a different-looking Jillaroos team get set to tackle the Kiwi Ferns in Wollongong. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of this women’s Test from 5:40pm (AEDT).

The Jillaroos and Ferns have often put on good games over the year, but it feels almost like a changing of the guard for the Australian side this year, and with a stinging defeat in the World Cup Nines last week, they will feel they have a point to prove.

While plenty of names have played in the green and gold before, players like Corban McGregor, Kirra Dibb and Keeley Davis, playing fullback, halves and hooker respectively, will get a chance to show what they are made of in the international colours.

All three had superb NRLW seasons, while Ali Brigginshaw will provide some stability at this level in the halves as she claims the number seven jumper once again.

It’s a classy spine for the Jillaroos, and playing off a strong forward pack featuring the likes of Millie Boyl, Hannah Southwell and Kezzie Apps, they should have ample opportunity to impress, with dangerous centres Jessica Sergis and Isabelle Kelly both named.

Sergis, who was named female player of the year at the recent Dally M awards, is likely to play a critical role for the Jillaroos in both attack and defence in this match.

The Kiwi Ferns have also got some fresh faces, but none more notable than Carntay Poko.

The half, who also debuted in NRLW this year for the Warriors, has one of the strongest kicking games we have ever seen in the female game, and will look to put that on show and challenge the Australian back three throughout this contest.

While she will look to organise the show, she is joined in the spine by Raecene McGregor, Apii Nicholls and Krystal Rota, all of whom like to play heads up footy, and have no problems running the ball, so it should work out nicely for the Kiwi Ferns to have Poko controlling the show.

Add that to the fact Honey Hireme has been shunted out to the centres, and that their forward pack will be led by Amber Hall and the inspirational Georgia Hale, and the weight of the challenge for the Jillaroos becomes clearer.

However, it’s the bench where the Jillaroos might have the advantage, and not just the forwards, with Botille Vette-Walsh likely to prove a game breaker for Brad Donald’s side.

Prediction
There isn’t much in this, but the Jillaroos will be stinging from last week’s Nines defeat. Expect them to get the job done in a thriller.

Jillaroos by 2.
