Blake Ferguson is back for the Parramatta Eels… but will he be able to spark them to an upset win over a Melbourne Storm juggernaut with the minor premiership within reach? Tune in to the action from Suncorp Stadium with live scores on The Roar from 7:35pm (AEST).
Maika Sivo’s heartbreaking ACL tear last week has opened the door for the veteran Ferguson to return to the fold, having been on the outer for much of the season.
After four straight losses to see them tumble out of the top four, the Eels steadied the ship with a 32-16 win over the Cowboys last week. Despite the loss of Sivo, the win has kept them in the running for the precious double chance, though games against the Storm and Panthers are just about the worst fixtures they could have hoped for to get that done.
Having been thrashed in recent times by the best sides going around, the Eels don’t necessarily have to win this, but must put up a fight to give supporters any kind of hope heading into the finals.
Nineteen consecutive wins leaves the Storm as favourites to defend their 2020 crown, with a win here enough to wrap up the minor premiership (barring, of course, two enormous Panthers wins and them getting annihilated by the Sharks in the final round). Get the job done here, and Craig Bellamy can use next week’s final home-and-away round to ensure his charges are cherry-ripe for the big time.
Having been forced out of the fullback spot he’s held for much of the year by Ryan Papenhuyzen, Nicho Hynes now drops back to the bench, with Jahrome Hughes having recovered from concussion to retake the number seven. That Hynes, one of the game’s brightest young stars, has been relegated to the pine is a sign of the unmatched depth the Storm have at their disposal. After being rested from last week’s win over the Titans, Brandon Smith and Justin Olam return to the fold. The major out is winger George Jennings with a knee injury.
The Eels inflicted one of the Storm’s two defeats for the year when they last met back in Round 2 – can they repeat the dose here?
