The Parramatta Eels will be out to snatch fifth spot on the NRL ladder in the final round of the season when they take on the Manly Sea Eagles, who have to learn how to play without Tom Trbojevic. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6pm (AEST).
Coming into this final round contest, the Sea Eagles sit in fifth spot, with the Eels behind them by just two competition points in sixth, and a for and against that is only 22 points less.
That means, should the blue and gold take a win on home soil by more than 11 points, they will slide up and take fifth spot, which sets up a home final against what is likely to be the winner of the Wests Tigers and Cronulla Sharks, rather than the Brisbane Broncos, as long as Brisbane beat the Bulldogs tomorrow night.
So, while there isn’t a great deal of difference between fifth and sixth, with both of these sides to be involved in elimination finals next weekend regardless of the result, momentum and form is important.
Manly come into the clash without Tom Trbojevic. His season came to an end last week in a difficult loss for the club to the Melbourne Storm, and the Sea Eagles premiership hopes seemingly were tossed out the back door in the same incident.
It’s a shame for Des Hasler’s side, because they have been the genuine good news story of the competition in 2019, however, getting over the bridge now will be a struggle.
Heading to Parramatta won’t be easy either, with their forwards the key if they are going to match it with the Eels, who have been excellent on their own home turf.
While their run into the eight has been phenomenal, they have lost two on the trot now to the Bulldogs and Broncos, however since Bankwest Stadium opened, they have won six of eight games at the venue and will play there next week.
The loss at home a fortnight ago comes as a worry, as does their ability to match it with the enormous Manly pack, but if they can control this game and defend their own line well, then it’s little surprise they come in as favourites.
Prediction
The Eels must win. They have lost two on the hop and should turn it around against Manly, who have a lot to learn about how they go about the remaining weeks of their season.
