Two teams destined for finals football clash as the Parramatta Eels host the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).
Both these teams enter Round 16 on the back of comfortable victories. Souths were undoubtedly the more convincing of the two, putting 56 points on Manly, whereas the Eels were actually outplayed for the first 20 minutes against Melbourne’s spare-parts side. That was before a tide of penalties and possession gifted the full-strength Eels the ascendency, but it was an unconvincing performance.
The vaunted Parramatta attack has been spluttering of late, with a perenially slippery home surface potentially contributing. The home side will be keen to back up their win over the Storm with a more impressive attacking display.
Souths have had their own struggles beating top-eight sides, with just one solitary win against sides currently finals-bound. This win came against the eighth-placed Sharks all the way back in Round 1, and time is running out for the Bunnies to show everyone including themselves they are capable of beating the better teams.
Wayne Bennett’s boys put a cricket score on a Manly side who was playing for their season. That should’ve translated to desperation, especially in defence. It was evident from early on though, after Manly were caught hopelessly short multiple times, that the Bunnies had to do little more to score than spread it gently from side to side.
The margin of victory will have given Souths confidence, yet beating a side who didn’t show up is rarely good preparation for a sterner challenge.
This one might be closer than the odds would suggest, but I’m tipping a narrow win for the Eels.
