The Penrith Panthers welcome back a swathe of stars as they look to break their two-match losing streak against the Sydney Roosters in a Friday night blockbuster. Follow the action from Penrith with live scores on The Roar from 7:55pm (AEST).
Nathan Cleary. Isaah Yeo. Brian To’o. Jarome Luai. Kurt Capewell. Yep, the Panthers’ list of ins is about as good as you get in the NRL, the quartet all back from State of Origin duty having been carefully managed by coach Ivan Cleary. Liam Martin is also back into the starting team.
Their return comes at a vital time, too; the Panthers have gone from being undefeated in 2021 to being knocked off top spot on the ladder in the fortnight they’ve been absent, defeats to the Tigers and Sharks seeing the Storm overtake them. However, with the differential gap just nine points, a resounding win here could see the Panthers retake their status as top dogs virtually instantly.
Changes had to be made to accommodate the returning guns, with some forced – Viliame Kikau won’t play with an ankle injury – and some simply dropped, headlined by Robert Jennings and Tyrone May.
Where the Panthers had a thrilling loss to the Sharks last week, the Roosters come in off a somehow even more exciting win – by a solitary point over the Titans in one of the craziest matches in recent history. 30-4 up with less than half an hour left, the Chooks simply fell asleep at the wheel, the Titans rattling on 30 consecutive points to lead in the dying minutes. In the ultimate get out of jail, though, the Roosters would lift at the death, a Matt Ikuvalu try and a Sam Walker field goal helping them to the great escape.
There will be no Walker heroics this week, though: the rising playmaker will miss with a dodgy shoulder. Joining him on the sidelines is back-rower Sitili Tupouniua with a foot injury. However, captain James Tedesco is a welcome inclusion, having been rested from the Titans match last week just days after Origin I.
It has been an emotional week for the Roosters, with captain Boyd Corner announcing his immediate retirement due to a spate of concussions. The Tricolours would love nothing more than to honour his legacy with a courageous win against the odds over the mighty Panthers.
