Match result:

An outstanding performance from half Charntay Poko and dogged defence from the New Zealand Warriors has led the Kiwi outfit to a stirring upset victory over the Sydney Roosters in the opening match of the second NRLW season.

The Warriors might have let in the first try of the game and spent much of the contest at the wrong end of the ground, but their forward pack defended well, refused to fatigue, and hung in the game.

While their defence won them the game, it was Poko who had one of the best kicking games we have seen in NRLW, laying the platform for the Warriors with an excellent mix of long-range and short-range kicking to get the Warriors going.

Georgia Hale had the opening try for the Warriors to level the game at halftime, before tries in the second half Poko and Atawhi Taupea sealed the game.

The Roosters will need to take their attack to another level if they are to make another NRLW grand final, with the team struggling throughout the 60 minutes today to finish breaks and create opportunities.

Final score
Roosters 12
Warriors 16

The second season of NRLW gets underway on Saturday afternoon as the Sydney Roosters get set to do battle with the New Zealand Warriors in Melbourne. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 3:05pm (AEST).

The Roosters, who were widely tipped to be one of the two teams to take out the competition last season, fell to Brisbane in the grand final after winning just one of their three games.

The tri-colours had a rough time of it against the Broncos both times they played them, and have made some big changes to the side for the new season, which includes the loss of big-name Maddie Studdon to the Dragons, who will play the Broncos in Parramatta tomorrow for the other opening-round game.

Tazmin Gray is the other key departure for the Sydney-based club, however, what they lose in departures, they gain in Corban McGregor, with the representative fullback missing all of last season through injury.

She is joined in a damaging back five by Karina Brown, Kiana Takairangi, Shontelle Stowes and Isabelle Kelly, while Ruan Sims and Vanessa Foliakia, along with Simaima Taufa-Kautai, lead the charge up front.

The trio are going to have a huge job to do this afternoon though, as they take on a New Zealand pack which never takes a backwards step.

Like the Roosters, the Warriors only won a single game in the first NRLW season, but that has little bearing on this clash, given they have changed most of their side.

12 players left the club during the off-season, while they also gained Honey Hireme from the Dragons, although one of the best players on the planet misses the first round due to personal reasons.

The Warriors pack might have the edge in size, but unless they can get on the front foot of the scoreboard early, this promises to be big score as they will fatigue and struggle to hang with the Roosters for the entire hour, and it becomes even more of a problem with unknown quantities Timaima Ravisa and Charntay Poko in the halves.

If the Warriors are to run up points, then Apii Nicholls will need to be sensational at the back.

Prediction
A tough grind during the first half, but look for the Roosters to bolt away with this at the back end and get their campaign off to a good start.

Roosters by 12.
