'I know he didn't gouge him': Ricky Stuart defends Hudson Young

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has defended his 21-year-old second-rower Hudson Young after another gouging controversy.

Young was suspended for five matches earlier this year for dangerous contact around the eyes of Bulldogs prop Aiden Tolman.

And he sparked another backlash during Canberra’s defeat to the Warriors, when replays showed him making contact with Adam Pompey’s
face as the winger scored a try.

Some such as Fox League commentator Brett Finch slammed Young and NRL immortal Andrew Johns argued that given the Raider had already
been suspended for a similar act, he should be “looking at 20 weeks” on the sidelines through suspension.

However, Stuart moved to calm the backlash, saying he believed Young, who told him he did not gouge Pompey.

Young has since been referred straight to the Judiciary by the Match Review Committee.
