The resurgent Chiefs will be looking to edge closer to a place in the Super Rugby Aotearoa postseason when they clash with the Hurricanes tonight in Hamilton. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from 5:505pm (AEST).
A month or so ago, the idea of the Chiefs being in contention for a spot in the final was preposterous. But after four wins on the trot, they’re arguably in the box seat to make the Aotearoa decider, given their closest rivals – the Blues – have to travel to Christchurch this week.
Damian McKenzie has rediscovered close to his best form for the men from Waikato, and produced a masterpiece at flyhalf last week in the side’s win over the Crusaders. Today, he shifts back to the 15 jersey with Bryn Gatland at first-five.
In a dent to the hosts’ hopes, though, they’ll have to make do without star back-rower Luke Jacobsen, who’s been ruled out of today’s match with concussion.
Jacobsen is not the most high-profile loosie missing tonight. The Hurricanes have been denied Ardie Savea’s services for two months after their skipper injured his MCL last time out. Hooker Dane Coles will lead the visitors in Savea’s absence, while Du’Plessis Kirifi comes into the starting side at openside flanker.
