The Melbourne Rebels have it all to do when they cross the Tasman to take on the undefeated Chiefs. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 2:35pm (AEDT).

Buoyed by their impressive win over the Waratahs last week, the Rebels will be brimming with confidence against the Chiefs and coach Kevin Foote has made minimal changes to the starting side and beefed up the front row with the inclusion of Sam Talakai at tighthead prop.

The only other change sees Tuaina Taii Tualima starting in place of Josh Canham in the second row.

The Rebels’ backline is unchanged and with Carter Gordon showing good form and pulling the strings from flyhalf, the visitors will be hoping for more of what they showed against the Waratahs in order to hand the Chiefs their first defeat of 2023.

The Chiefs have used this game as one of their All Blacks rest matches and are without a host of top-line players, including Brad Weber, Damian McKenzie, Brodie Retallick and Sam Cane.

Even without those names, the Chiefs have a pretty good squad on paper and with Luke Jacobson taking the place of Cane, the Rebels will still need to be on top of their game.

The Chiefs’ back three have been an exciting prospect so far in 2023, and with Shaun Stevenson carving up the opposition, there will be little room for error for the Rebels’ defence, or one of Stevenson’s support acts in Etene Nani-Sturo and Emoni Narawa will start causing problems.

The odds might be stacked against them, but if the Rebels are on their game with Richard Hardwick leading the way defensively, and Carter Gordon, Stacy Ili and Reece Hodge show the same game smarts as last week, then we should be in for an exciting game.
