The Melbourne Rebels are back on home soil for an Australian derby against the ACT Brumbies on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Park. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:35pm (AEST).
The Rebels may be just outside the finals positions but have shown much promise in 2023 with their style of play to have several players in the Wallabies selection frame. This match may be overshadowed by the Waratahs and Reds match this weekend but still has an impact on the thought process of Wallabies coach Eddie Jones as he builds towards the first Test of the year.
With backup flyhalf still a question, the matchup of Carter Gordon and Noah Lolesio will be one to keep an eye on, as will Andrew Kellaway and Tom Wright at fullback with spot still not nailed down at international level.
The Brumbies are on a three-match win streak against the Rebels, and their forwards are known for their strengths but this looms as a danger match as the Rebels welcome back Richard Hardwick to an impressive backrow combination and his on-ball presence will be an important factor.
The visitors welcome back Pete Samu and Len Ikitau after injury concerns, and their absence was felt in the loss against the Hurricanes where the Brumbies were off in several areas that ultimately cost them in the final washup.
With the expected conditions suited to the forwards, it could come down to the bench options for both sides. The Rebels front row replacement trio of Jordan Uelese, Cabous Eloff and Pone Fa’amausili will fancy their chances against the relatively inexperienced Billy Pollard, Blake Schoupp and Rhys van Nek, with the latter looking to put in a good performance against his former side.
Prediction
The Rebels have been fast starters in recent games but have shown a tendency to fall away in the second half. They need to put together an 80-minute performance to knock off the Brumbies. Brumbies by 6.
