Raelene Castle on why the Sunwolves have been axed

Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle has spoken following confirmation of SANZAAR’S decision to cut the Sunwolves from Super Rugby.

The Sunwolves will be made to play out the remainder of not only this season, but the 2020 campaign as well before a new broadcast deal the following year will see the competition reduced to 14 teams.

Speaking to media in Sydney, Castle explained the background for the sudden decision which comes during just the Sunwolves’ fourth season, arguing that when the JRFU withdrew their underwrite support for the team it left SANZAAR with a headache that would have cost “tens of millions of dollars”.

Reports have previously stated the Sunwolves had been asked to pay a Super Rugby participation fee, which no other club is required to.

Castle confirmed that Rugby Australia will continue to build its relationship with the JRFU, amid suggestions the Cherry Blossoms could soon be included in the rugby championship.
