WATCH: Daryl Gibson on why he's leaving the Waratahs

NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson has announced he will step aside from his role, despite having a year left on his contract.

It marks quite a turnaround for Gibson, who in February this year, had re-signed with the Waratahs until the end of the 2020 season.

Despite reaching the Super Rugby playoffs in 2018, the Waratahs were unable to improve on last year’s results, failing to reach the finals.

A rebuild of sorts looms, with a number of key players heading overseas following the World Cup in Japan commencing in September.

Gibson is rumoured to be in contention for an assistant coaching role with the Wallabies.
