Melbourne City’s hopes of a maiden A-League premiership hang in the balance as they host the struggling Newcastle JetsThe Roar for live scores from 4pm (AEDT).

Last week’s draw with Brisbane Roar saw the gap between City and ladder-leaders Sydney FC widen to a whopping 11 points.

As the season reaches its halfway point, time is fast running out for Eric Mombaerts’ charges to make a play on top spot, and with the red-hot Perth Glory fast closing in, a third loss in five weeks could have disastrous consequences.

With plenty to play for, City have received a handy boost with the arrival of veteran Spaniard Markel Susaeta. The 32-year old from Athletic Bilbao was good enough to earn an international cap with Spain during their reign as World Cup champions, scoring in a 5-1 rout of Panama back in 2012.

They might have been defeated 2-1 by Sydney FC last week, but considering the Jets’ horror campaign had slumped to a new low with the sacking of coach Ernie Merrick just days before, it was a mighty effort to push the Sky Blues all the way.

Interim coach Craig Deans instantly had the Jets playing with newfound intensity as they controlled much of the game, but outside of an early stunner from Steven Ugarkovic, they were unable to convert their numerous chances.

City’s defence has been leaky at times this season – only the Jets themselves have conceded more goals – and the men from Newcastle will certainly fancy their chances of causing an upset. However, the loss of goalkeeper Glen Moss for up to six weeks with a calf injury is a heavy blow.

This one could be close, but given the Jets haven’t tasted victory since November, it’s difficult to tip them with any confidence.
