Newcastle Jets host Western United at McDonald Jones Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:30pm (AEST).

After a positive re-start to their season following the COVID break, the Jets will be targeting another three points against Mark Rudan’s side in their return home to McDonald Jones Stadium. After a great result with their late win over premiers Sydney FC, Newcastle came to Central Coast Stadium facing a Mariners side that was ripe for the picking.

Those two points dropped may well come back to bite them as they are in a serious battle for a finals spot. Adelaide, in sixth, aren’t out of reach, but the Hunter side will need to win basically all of their remaining fixtures while hoping other sides do them a favour with wins over Adelaide and Western United.

At time of writing, the Reds also have a game in hand on the Jets, while United have three. A win in their match against Perth might just sink the Jets. A combination of this result and a loss for the Jets in this match would be an utter disaster.

Rudan’s side are coming off a solid win over rivals Melbourne Victory. The coach was pragmatic in his assessment of the result when speaking to Fox Sports post-game. “For us, it was all about the three points,” he said.

“Before the COVID period, we were playing really well. We scored 11 goals in two games, we wanted to continue that attacking game.”

United are very much in the fight for a finals spot, sandwiched right between Adelaide and tonight’s opponent at the time of writing. They are one point out of sixth place but, crucially, have two games in hand on Adelaide. A win here would see them into a very comfortable position, with their finals destiny in their own hands and would leave Newcastle in a hell of a bind.

Prediction
There’s a pluckiness to the Jets under manager Carl Robinson and they’re undefeated against Western United. I’ll go for a 2-1 Newcastle win here.
