When the Nix travelled to Sydney last week to come up against the Sky Blues, their fans’ most realisitic hope would likely have been to split the points, though some no doubt dared to dream of a shock win.
Still, none could have predicted that the result would be not just a win, but an absolutely devastating one at that – scoring three goals in the first half to have the game be effectively over at half time.
Sydney FC managed to get a goal in reply and keep the Mariners scoreless in the second half, but a 3-1 scoreline still meant Wellington gained their second win of the season and a massive feather in their cap.
It was their first win in six games, having most recently beaten the Newcastle Jets 2-1 in October. This week, they’ll be hoping to take their third.
The Mariners on the other hand after seven weeks in business find themselves still without a win for the year – the only team in the league left winless this late in the season, and unsurprisingly they are at the bottom of the table.
