Central Coast Mariners travel two hours down the east coast to face the Wollongong-based Wellington Phoenix in the first of three Saturday night A-League Men’s fixtures. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:05pm (AEDT).
After an impressive victory against traditional rivals Newcastle Jets in the opening week of action, the Mariners have picked up from exactly where they left off in the 2020/21 regular season, winning games when many prefer the chances of the opposition. Young star Jacob Farrell made a stunning debut on the scoresheet against the Jets and Josh Nisbet played an interesting new attacking role for manager Nick Montgomery. However the Mariners’ best asset this season could well be the settled defensive unit they possess, with Farrell the only new member of the current back four.
The Phoenix grabbed a point against the Bulls in Newcastle last week, they enjoyed only moderate possession, yet at different stages of the second half looked the potential winner. Englishman Gary Hooper’s penalty was deservedly awarded, however there did appear to be a lack of creativity and imagination in attack, a problem that manager Ufuk Talay will be hoping Reno Piscopo can solve against a defensively solid Mariners outfit.
