The A-League’s two most in-form sides go head to head in the match of the week at Westpac Stadium, as the Wellington Phoenix take on ladder-leaders Sydney FC. Join The Roar for live scores from 2:45pm (AEDT).
The Phoenix’s run of matches without defeat extended to five following their 0-0 draw away to Melbourne Victory last week, but they know they’ll have to reach far greater heights to challenge the white-hot Sky Blues.
They undoubtedly had the better of the match against a struggling Victory, but with their opponents reduced to ten men for the final half-hour after Kristijan Dobras was sent off, coach Ufuk Talay would be disappointed they couldn’t capitalise with a match-winning goal.
Just two shots on target out of 17 told the tale of a team who struggled to challenge Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas, and against the A-League’s stingiest defence in the Sky Blues, a repeat of that sort of front-half impotence will be punished.
Sydney FC themselves had no such troubles against lesser opposition, a Kosta Barbarouses goal just five minutes in proving enough to secure them all three points against Central Coast.
Remarkably, they finished with fewer shots and shots on target than the gritty but outclassed Mariners, but another excellent display from in-form shot-stopper Andrew Redmayne, who did brilliantly to keep out a Giancarlo Gallifuoco header in the dying minutes, meant the reigning champions weren’t made to pay the price.
They’ll be sweating on the fitness of star midfielder Milos Ninkovic for the trip to Wellington, though; the veteran’s night was ended by a calf injury early in the second half against the Mariners.
Prediction
This should be a beauty. At home in Sydney, you’d be hard-pressed to tip against the Sky Blues. But the Phoenix, provided they improve on last week’s showing against the Victory, will be a massive challenge in front of their home crowd.
Let’s split the difference and call it an entertaining draw. 2-2.
