It’s hard not to have some sympathy for the Phoenix this season. Forced to relocate to Wollongong from New Zealand, they’ve struggled to match their form from last year. They’ve won just a single one of their six matches to date, and entered the weekend ahead of only the lowly Melbourne Victory on the table.
They’re on a two-match losing streak, although did spring a surprise win against the Mariners a week earlier. They’ll be hoping for a similar shock result against the Wanderers, who have hit good form at the start of the season.
Carl Robinson’s men haven’t actually lost in 2021, with their only defeat of the season coming in December against Macarthur. Since then, they’ve collected a trio each of draws and wins to establish their credentials as probably the hardest team to beat in the competition.
That said, they still haven’t quite clicked in attack yet, going at only a fraction over a goal per game, and will no doubt be eyeing tonight’s fixture as an opportunity to find some form in their forward third of the field.
