With new coach Carl Robinson taking the reins for the first time, Newcastle Jets will be looking for a second consecutive victory when they travel north to take on the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday night. Join The Roar for live scores from 7.30pm (AEDT).

With the Jets having defeated the Central Coast Mariners in interim coach Craig Dean’s final game in charge, Robinson has some unexpected form to work with as he begins the job of pulling the Jets out of the mire.

Despite their entertaining 4-3 win in the wet last week, they remain rooted to the bottom of the A-League ladder, though only goal difference separates them from the Mariners in second-last.

Their last victory before knocking off the Mariners came against the Wanderers themselves back in November, which should give Robinson and the Jets some confidence of causing an upset here.

The Wanderers haven’t made finals since their runner-up effort back in 2015/16, and it’s looking increasingly likely they will again be watching on at the business end of this season.

They currently sit eighth on the ladder, five points behind the sixth-placed Brisbane Roar – not an impossible gap to make up, but decidedly tricky for a team which hasn’t won consecutive games since October.

They’ll get the chance to do that this week, though, given their scheduled Derby showdown with Sydney FC last week was postponed due to an onslaught of rain. It means the Wanderers haven’t played since their 3-1 win over the Mariners a fortnight ago.

Like the Jets, they’ve also got a new man at the helm in the form of Jean-Paul De Marigny, who is looking to become the first coach in club history to win his first two games in charge.

Prediction
A battle of two new coaches could see both sides look very different to what they’ve produced so far this season, making this match-up very difficult to tip.

However, the Wanderers are still well and truly in the hunt for finals, and with that at stake, the extra motivation should give them the edge.

Wanderers 2-0 Jets
