The NSW Blues hopes of defending their 2018 Origin title are on a knife’s edge when both states travel to play Game 2 of the series in faraway Perth.

The second match of 2019 State of Origin series will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth, with the kick-off scheduled for 7:50pm AEST on Sunday 23 June.

That’s 5:50pm in the local AWST time zone.

After losing the first match to the Maroons in Queensland by four points, the Blues need to win this one to keep the series alive and book in a decider next month at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Queensland will fancy their chances of getting a win here and icing the series. Given that a potential decider would be on their opponent’s home turf, this might be their strongest chance.

It’s the first time that Origin has been taken to Western Australia, in celebration of the renowned new stadium which opened its doors for the first time last year.

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 which is expected to increase to about 65,000 when configured for a rectangular ground.

The highest crowd at the ground so far is 59,608 for the West Coast Eagles’ 2018 preliminary final where they defeated the Melbourne Demons.

The stadium also attracted 56,371 fans for Perth Glory’s grand final against Sydney FC last month, which the Glory lost on penalties.

The stadium has also hosted a Test match against India last summer, and the only Australian-hosted game of the Bledisloe Cup will be hosted there later in 2019.

The venue has also seen performances from Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Eminem, with Metallica, U2 and Queen all set to grace the stadium before the end of 2019.

Eskimo Joe will provide pre-match entertainment at Origin 2, after indigenous rapper Briggs performed at the first game of the series.

Last year Origin went to the MCG along with the traditional strongholds of ANZ and Suncorp.
